  12. This is actually a huge win for USR to beat PSD’s candidate who has always been in the top 2 candidates for president. Romanian parties are split into right wing (liberals), left wing (social-democrats) and sovereign (nationalist) and it’s the first time the left doesn’t have a candidate in the final 2

  18. Most Romanians, at least ALL I got to talk with, are in shock. The extreme right candidate Georgescu came practically out of nowhere, nobody knew who he is, and the leftist Ciolacu was sure bet for the first place. Shock and fear about a possible pro-Russia president.

  21. The only good news about this election. A lot of people voted for Georgescu without knowing who he was or what he stands for.

    I still have hope that for the 2nd round many of them will find out and change their vote.

    Lasconi is actually the only decent option and if it wasn’t for Georgescu, she probably wouldn’t have reached the 2nd round (and that’s because the people that voted for Georgescu would have never voted for Lasconi).

  26. USR, Lasconi’s party, is a centrist, progressive party, mostly voted by urbanites from the big cities and educated people from the diaspora. Therefore, we have a runoff between a quasi-fascist and the most liberal candidate in the race. Romanian democracy is anything but boring, I’ll give my fellow countrymen that.

  27. All Lasconi needs is one direct confrontation with him and she will dismantle him. Basically any sane human being can easily dismantle this mysoginist, fascist, racist, conspiracy theorist and Putin ass-licker. Seeing this guy talk is like being on drugs, he makes alien talk on the History channel look sane.

  30. This clusterfuck needs to be studies so that it may never happen again. If you told me yesterday that a cantidate with no party backing, no tv presence, no real advertisement, would go from under 0% to 20% I’d have thought you mad. There’s no way in hell a Tiktok campain gets a nobody to beat the largest parties in the country. This is blatant use of foreign media to influence elections and create a russian puppet state.

  32. I think those elections are a prime candidate for the most drama intense elections in the last many many years (not Romania but worldwide).

    1. A candidate nobody not voting for him heard about. A candidate that 2 days ago had 5% maybe, today has almost 25%. It’s like US presidential would be won by a 3rd party. Such things just dont happen. Especially in Romania where there is a deep network of party members able to gather votes and people usually don’t vote newcomers but apparently things are changing now. At an incredible pace.
    2. PSD out of round 2 was impossible even in my best dreams. A party able to gather support from the elderly even if this against their interest (yesterday I heard some friend of my grandma that she is voting for PSD/Ciolacu because her pension was increased even if same PSD/Ciolacu cut off her food assistance allowance which was worth more). Then there is so many members and mayors able to gather support and coerce people earning different kind of social aids to vote for them. And so many more classes of people that vote for them. I dont think this is the party score and it’s just that Ciolacu managed to be very annoying with all his luxury and corruption scandals. But this clearly shows a possible begining of the end for PSD which at least for me until yesterday was looking eternal.
    3. The difference between 2nd and 3rd will be extremely small. Around 0.01% difference and with such a huge impact it’s insane. Adds a lot to the drama.
    4. PNL out of 2nd round. This wasn’t a surprise but it wasn’t a clear defeat at the begin of the election. I have some friends, party members and they told be that despite the polls, PNL will gather a lot of votes due to the excellent mobilization of the party. But it wasn’t enough. At all.

    Overall , even if PNL and PSD disappearance from the political landscape of Romania is long overdue, i just can believe this actually happened or it’s about to happen. Those parties crushed last election during summer winning almost everything. And for me at least, things were not anyway better then so i was disappointed in the lack of desire of change from the Romanian people.

    Now talking about future. Lasconi (pro EU) its the favorite here, many people will gather behind her against the Russian guy. At this point she just have to keep it cool and not lose it.

    But i don’t consider that so many people voted for the Russian assets (including AUR’s Simion), its just that many people really wanted a change from the old parties. This guy could be as well be an alien and speak gibberish, as long as it was clear he is against the old party system he would gather a similar amount of votes. Now, dont underestimate people voting for him for his Russian friendly view, but they are not 22%, maybe 5% at most. Rest are just people that want to change at all costs and i understand why. And most of his voters don’t understand for now what he is actually saying but being in the spotlight for next 2 weeks will weaken him. Or at least this should happen but apparently we’re in for a lot of surprises here

  33. What are the chances that PSD voters vote for Georgescu over Lasconi in the second round, given that as far as I understand the PSD is quite socially conservative?
