FFS. They didn’t even bothered googling the thing. It’s in the third paragraphe on the wikipedia page. x)
And then some random people try really hard to speak French in Antwerpen centraal.
Was talking to a Frenchman yesterday who travels quite regularly to Belgium for work (granted, probably only to Wallonia). He was convinced the whole country only spoke French…
Learn to pronounce “Salut” like a true Belgian (who, like everyone knows, is very likely to speak French)
Persons who live in the French speaking wallon part of Belgium +/- 3,6million, persons who live in the Dutch speaking Flemish part : +/- 6,5 million. So it’s a big lie !! (numbers are from 2019)
Commo a va? …. What to do with the answer you’ll get..
L’addition seel voo play 🤣
Back when I worked at a restaurant, I once had a table of 8-10 british people. When I asked them if they were ready to order, they all turned to look at one woman of the company. That woman started to try to order in french. I had to stop her and tell her that my french really isn’t that good and that I prefer english. They were very surprised and had to ask about the “fact” that all belgians speak french.
I had to disappoint her that less than half of the country has french as a first language.
I would kind of understand that behaviour from Americans, since they’re so far away from europe. But I expected a bit more sense from british people traveling to what is practically their neighbouring country.
My father in law, who is a Brit, speaks a little bit of French. He always tries to speak in French to people when he’s here, but I live in Gent. Not only is his French not great, he also has a very thick English accent when speaking it, which confuses the shit out of people.
I’ve tried to explain that people understand English way better than French here, but he always seems super excited to try out his French, so he keeps doing it
Sal oo everyone! 👋🏼 (Sorry for the small number of Flemish, cos you can’t understand this). 😄
