Brexit wasn’t just the fault of ‘crazy Brits’ – Angela Merkel’s memoir proves it

1. ‘Brexit, to many European leaders at the time and since, has been a swearword. On my professional shuttles between Brussels, Berlin and Paris, it’s a word uttered with an eye-roll about the foolishness of Brits in exiting the European Union on a whim in the 2016 referendum.

   One of the mighty figures in the era [leading up to the Brexit vote](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/inside-whitehall-plan-achieve-eu-reset-3257360?ico=in-line_link) has, however, kept shtum about her feelings on the Great British Out. Until now.

   ‘Angela Merkel’s new door-stopping memoir *Freedom*, out this week, gives a revealing account of her own response to the Leave result.

   ‘It is a lot more reflective than her bloodless comments at the time, which suggested that the UK and David Cameron deserved the Continental cold shoulder that resulted from the vote.

   ‘There’s a keen sense of self-justification threaded through a densely written autobiography. But on the topic of Brexit, there’s also a glimmer acknowledgement that it was not just “you crazy Brits!”, as a headline in the *Bild* tabloid once put it.’

5. No, I am pretty sure that crazy Brits had a referendum and, by a small margin, voted to shoot the UK in the foot. Angela Merkel did not eject the UK from the EU.
