One of the big curiosities I have for this particular conflict that I hope eventually sees the light of day is what was Angela Merkel’s reason for letting the cat out of the bag on the Minsk Agreements.
Realistically, her admissions about Minsk in in her interview with Die Zeit threw Germany and France under the bus diplomatically. As a former chancellor privy to that knowledge, admitting to negotiating in bad faith after leaving office is something of a dick move for the current administration.
From the outside, purely objectively, there was no real benefit to doing so except MAYBE showing off that Merkel was not as soft on Russia as the current administration in Germany would make her out to be.
But her political career was already retired, and fairly gracefully at that (i.e. before the current shit-show kicked off), so this line of reasoning comes off as a little unnecessary and more importantly, very un-Merkel-like in the sense that its kind of unsophisticated and the sort of emotional kneejerk that she rarely blundered into during her time as Chancellor.
Curious about whether it was a deliberate “screw you” and doubly curious about who in particular it was directed against and why.
