On this day in 1321, 700 years ago, Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin Nemanjić died in Nerodimlje. He ruled Serbia for 40 years.

  4. During Ottoman rule, in 1460, his remains were transferred to Sofia (today capital of Bulgaria) to be housed in the a monastery near the city church due to a plague epidemic. They were later transferred to the city’s new metripolitan church, Sveta Nedelya. Both that monastery and the church hence became known as “Sveti Kral” (Holy King).
