NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – The North Platte Planning Commission addressed key city planning issues at Tuesday’s meeting, including approving a 42-unit row-style housing development off 18th and Hayes near Buffalo Bill Avenue. The Commission also discussed regulations for crypto mining and data centers.
“Crypto takes a lot of energy, based on my research. It doesn’t create jobs and creates quite a bit of noise,” said Planning and Zoning Administrator Judy Clark. “They’re computers, and you have to keep them cool, so the cooling fans do that by making a lot of noise. Data centers are a little bit different; they house things like precision ag like farmers use a lot of their GIS systems, so that’s what these data centers do, or they’re used for hospitals.”
Clark explained that some crypto mining and data center operations would fall under permitted use, but others might require conditional use permits, depending on the specifics. Data centers are less demanding in terms of energy usage and noise compared to crypto mining and are viewed as potential job creators. The Commission will continue to review these regulations as more details and discussions are needed before they can proceed.
In a separate decision, the Commission approved the housing development, which will feature six buildings, each containing seven one-story, three-bedroom, two-bath units offering 1,122 square feet of space with an attached single-car garage.
The proposal will be submitted to the Community Redevelopment Authority Tuesday at 9:00 a.m., and if approved, it will then be presented to the North Platte City Council at 5:30 p.m. the same day.
