Millions of Russians turn to BBC News

  1. BBC Russian news website has tripled its normal level of visitors. Some Russians are trying to find real news.

  2. Sure we do, there is nothing but pro-Kremlin propaganda in the local news on government-owned channels.

I have seen such a nice people in comments and heard many kind words, and tried my best to answer as many questions as I can, but there are too many, sorry if I missed some. Anyways, best of luck to you guys, we want peace!

  3. Just for the context: recently Russian government started blocking Echo of Moscow (“Эхо Москвы”) and Dojd (“Дождь”) — these are very few Russian media who tried to show the war in Ukraine objectively.

  4. I’m curious if the figures for Yle Novosti have bumped up since it’s from the Finnish broadcast company bringing news in Russian for the Finnish-Russian minorities

  5. Reminds me of the days right before NATO started bombing Serbia in 1999. I was but a kid, but unlike my parents I knew English, so my Dad would frequently turn the channel to BBC or CNN and ask me to translate – What are they saying, are they going to bomb us??

  6. In Soviet times, a saying: Есть привычка на Руси – ночью слушать BBC.

“There’s a habit in the Rus – to listen to BBC after it gets dark.”

Too tired to translate in the form of a matching rhyme, but I’m glad to see the BBC is still serving as a way for Russians to learn the realities of the world.

  7. The BBC and its funding regularly comes underfire in the UK. But its important in times like these to realise how vital it is to have an independent news organisation, with a mandate of impartiality.

  8. Shouldn’t they realize their government fucked up when every international sports organization is banning them?

  9. By the way – we should all do this; seek out news ~~form~~ from different sources. As most (all?) news stations are bias to some degree.

  10. One of the largest and most influential russian media that still was breave enough to call war a war, radio Echo of Moscow, was liquidated today. A day before it was shut down TV Rain. In a couple of days there will be no independant media left in Russia, which leaves only social networks (idk how long YT will work) and media like BBC that still have Russian version, though I believe they will be blocked too. If on Friday pootin announces mobilisation one can expect total shutdown and who knows how the internet will work.

90% of russian population do not know english, many of them do not use internet. Add here total lack of education and ability for critical thinking and you will have 70% of population supporting this madness. On the other hand, they will understannd it too. With time.

  11. BBC News is excellent.

I’m proud to say I’m no longer ignorant about Africa. I love listening to the World Service at night and hearing all about what’s going on there.

Who else with that kind of reach and power is covering Africa?

  12. Putin is destroying his regime over an entirely imagined NATO threat. Astounding.

Edit: the question shouldn’t be whether Eastern Europe should be allowed to join NATO, they’re sovereign countries. It should be why they felt so threatened by Putin they all joined the alliance.

  13. This is why I don’t mind paying my TV licence. BBC is one of the best when it comes to journalism. Proud of the BBC!

It’s disgusting what the Tories are doing to it. It’s the number 1 instrument of the UK’s soft power. The fact they’re trying to dismantle it is an act of self harm.

  14. I would reinstall BBC on my phone again once they made the option available that it can stop giving me push notifications about English royals.
