I’m from Sweden and my girlfriend is from Södra Österbotten. I’ve been learning some Finnish as a hobby since I think it’s quite fun to be able to use some Finnish words with my girlfriend and her family here and there, plus I just enjoy learning languages and linguistics as a hobby!

I’m wondering what some good words and phrases are that are pretty strongly associated with Etelä-Pohjanmaan murre so I can try and incorporate some of these words in my speech and surprise my girlfriend and her family at the Christmas table, since I’m spending Christmas in Finland this year! The Wikipedia article on the dialect from Etelä-Pohjanmaa has a few examples (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Ostrobothnian_dialect) but was hoping to hear some more from you guys! 🙂

  1. Ristus notta!

    I leave you to find a translation for that! 😀

  2. Here’s a list of some words and the Fiinnish translations. https://visitseinajoki.fi/kaupunki/kiva-tietaa-seinajoesta/murresanakirja/

  3. Ostrobothnian dialects (like most Finnish dialects) are in my opinion more about how the words in general are used, not specific words. Intonation, specific ways to inflect, etc. Adding H, using R instead of D, doubling some vowels etc. Some words

    Emäntä = wife, female spouse

    Moon = I am

    Oho = Sorry (this is actually pretty universal in south too)

    Kurmoottaa = bully

    Since you are Swedish, I recommend you look into Ostrobothnian dialects in Swedish. I doubt you understand much of their Swedish. [https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96sterbottniska](https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96sterbottniska)
