Greece’s geographic location positions it as a strategic hub for submarine fiber optic cables, according to Les Echos, a French financial newspaper.
The report highlights French company Data4’s decision to build Greece’s largest data center campus in Paiania, underscoring the country’s potential to become a significant player in global data storage.
The project includes two data centers, each with a capacity of 15 megawatts, with the first expected to be operational by late 2026 or early 2027. Depending on demand, additional facilities may follow, with the investment potentially growing from an initial €300 million to €500 million or even €1 billion.
Data4 CEO Olivier Micheli cited the availability of land in Attica and Greece’s pro-business policies as key factors in selecting the country for expansion, joining existing Data4 locations in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Poland.
Greece’s largest telecommunications provider, Cosmote, is also planning to develop seven new submarine fiber-optic infrastructure works in the Aegean as a member of the consortium of companies implementing the European Sea-Spine project.
