Alstom, a leader in smart and sustainable mobility, marked a major milestone with the 100th anniversary of its Florence site, recognizing its vital role in revolutionizing railway signalling across Italy.
The event brought together prominent figures, including Eugenio Giani, President of the Tuscany Region, Andrea Giorgio, Florence’s Councillor for Mobility, Ecological Transition, and Urban Security, as well as Stefano Franchi, President of Federmeccanica, and Stefano Bettini, Vice-President of Federmeccanica.
This centenary celebration not only highlighted the remarkable history of the Florence facility but also underscored its contributions to advancing rail technology, making it a cornerstone in Italy’s transportation infrastructure and a testament to Alstom’s continued innovation in the sector.
In response to the expanding growth of its Digital, Infrastructure, and Signalling sectors, Alstom welcomed over 100 new employees in 2024. Additionally, the company is actively recruiting, with around 60 job openings available across various fields, including Engineering, Supply Chain, Industrialisation, Production, and Project Management.
“This anniversary marks a significant milestone and reflects a deep connection with the local community, which continues to be strengthened thanks to the daily dedication of the over 210 employees working here and our ongoing pursuit of cutting-edge solutions,” said Michele Viale, Managing Director of Alstom in Italy. “Our Florence site has always been a benchmark for innovation and the quality of railway signalling products. For over a century, we have contributed to developing smarter and safer mobility, not only in Italy but also internationally.”
The Florence site, established in 1924 and part of the Alstom group since 2015, is a key centre for the production of advanced electronic and electromechanical solutions for railway signalling. Specialising in systems such as level crossing protection, point machines, and train detection technologies—including track circuits and axle counters—the site also assembles electrical and electronic racks and shelters for railway networks.
A hub of innovation, the Florence facility plays a crucial role in developing cutting-edge technologies like the Satellite-based European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which improves the safety and efficiency of railway operations.
Beyond its research and development capabilities, the Florence site is the only industrial manufacturing hub for Alstom’s signalling products in Italy and one of just six such centres worldwide. It also offers comprehensive maintenance and customer support services.
The site is a cornerstone of Alstom’s global leadership in digital and integrated railway systems. With over 20,000 point machines produced—including 1,200 CTS2 units, 750 axle counters, and 4,500 track circuits—the Florence facility’s products are trusted and deployed in countries including Denmark, Sweden, Bulgaria, France, Egypt, India, Argentina, Switzerland, and Ireland, reflecting Alstom’s strong global footprint and customer confidence.
