Johnson to present list of Russian Oligarchs in the UK

  1. So the British government plans to seize any asset of any rich Russian? Where is the rule of law and due process in this? If the Russian oligarch is accused of a crime, then there needs to be evidence, witnesses, and a trial before a judge and jury. There needs to be the normal process of law. If the government just randomly seizes someone’s assets based on their ethnicity or nationality, then that is a blatant violation of civil rights.

I am not arguing in favor of the rich Russians, but out of enormous concern that this breaks Britain’s democratic laws and opens the door for all kinds of future abuses. Maybe the British government will seize the assets of Irish citizens next? Or the French? The British have long histories of animosity with those folks, so if can seize Russian assets, then why not Irish and French as well?

Do you see how dangerous this is?

  2. Well first the “oligarchs ” will need to be identified, hence the list. Considering London’s nickname is Londongrad, it would be strange if they were not sanctioned, and be ” free to live happy and merry ” over there as if nothing ever happened. While the plan is to sancion them.
But yeah it’s weird and I imagine they will proceed and act with “due process”

Ps: I also know that in several countries, inquiries are being made to isolate Pootins strowmen in political positions. So yes, it could be dangerous; ”
if you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you”.

  3. Abramovich gets a pass and other oligarchs get 18 months to get their money out of Britain. Very considerate of Johnson, you don’t want to rush those oligarchs.

  4. Arsenal supporter Keir Starmer apparently didn’t have any problems with russian oligarchs while one them owned his favourite club … ? Putin has apparently made wars and military actions all the way since he became president some 22 years ago (grozny 99-00 looked as bombed out as Berlin 1945). .. and still now they want to make a list of russian oligarchs in 2022?

  5. I understand the criticism some of you make about the UKS seeming blindness towards some of the oligarchs, but this is because you make some fundamental misunderstandings.

Not all Oligarchs are Putin/Russia supporters. The U.K. has had a very active policy for **decades** to make itself a base and a safe port for Russian dissidents, whether they are journalists up to major Oligarchs.

This is what has caused all the major stories we all remember, from polonium to novichok poisoning.

The fact is, some of these oligarchs are avowed enemies of Putin, and have been working with British intelligence and the British establishment to undermine and try bring down Putin for decades.

This is not a fight the U.K. has come to in the last few weeks like some of you. The U.K. has been in a de facto state of Cold War with Russia for a generation. Indeed one can argue that the Cold War never really ended between the U.K. and Russia (formerly the USSR).

So, do not rush to judgement on this issue using your limited understanding. You have to conceptualise and understand in your head the scale of activity the U.K. has been undertaking to combat Russia, since the early 2000s.

It’s not so easy for the U.K. to just find the name of every Russian oligarch and wham, sanction. It has a more complicated analysis it must undertake to identify exactly which Oligarchs to sanction, and which to allow to continue working with us.
