I mean, if that what we see in the past weeks is the ‘mighty superpower russia’, I think we’re pretty well of defense-wise.
To be fair he’s been saying this even before the invasion. European Military, Energetic and economic Independence has been one of the hallmarks of his foreign policy.
Yes we must! Now we only need Scholz to do more federation.
finally.
edit:
>“We can no longer depend on others to feed us, care for us, inform us, finance us,” Macron said. “We cannot depend on others to defend us, whether on land, at sea, under the sea, in the air, in space or in cyberspace. In this respect, our European defense must take a new step forward.”
Ok, sure. Has Macron offered security guarantees to Finland and Sweden in case of a Russian attack?
Re-arming would be relatively easy in comparison to creating a unified European Military Command structure above and beyond NATO.
Can anyone realistically envision a working European Army under one flag?
reposting from the megathread because i didn’t see this. megathreads really kill vitality of a sub.
Okay so ignoring the UK as even if they rejoin the EU they have probably already integrated with the US and Aussies.
EU spends 200 billion Euros and because its spread around like 27 countries you get a lot of duplication and admin overlap. Low end stuff is covered way more than high end stuff.
Don’t even have to start big. Start deploying in pairs like the Dutch German brigade. Focus on equipment standardization above all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Double the French nuke budget and make it European after it’s extended to all of EU. Someone asked me how this works once who controls it. You’ve lived under the American nuclear umbrella for 80 years now. Tell me who you think controls it lmao.
edit: more thought that part can be negotiated, but probably initially just under French control.
There is a specific lack of EU strategic resources for the military.
I spent years arguing with Europeans on the need for “offensive weapons” like drones, tankers, and AWACS, but all I got was we don’t plan on attacking anyone, we’re defending. You can uh see how useful drones are for defending…
Build the European Army, build it grande. Do not let nationalism or industry or jobs dictate stuff as much as possible. For example, Germany you have no experience in designing aircraft. Let France be prime contractor. Unless you want an aircraft in 2050.
Last point. Don’t trust America, Trump or a Republican has a good chance of winning.
edit2 : It isn’t all good news for French lol, English is the only realistic language of this European Army. Toss nationalism out the window for pragmatism pls.
