The importance of coordinating Greek-Cypriot economic policies aiming at the dynamic development of the two economies was emphasized by the Secretary General of International Economic Relations and President of Enterprise Greece, Dimitris Skalkos, in his intervention at the “2nd Greece-Cyprus Summit: Advancing Together” held in Nicosia on 27 November 2024, in parallel with the 2nd Greece-Cyprus Intergovernmental Summit.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Skalkos explained that “effective coordination in new fields of economic activity and in new fields related to our economic security will allow us to reap the fruits of the growth potential of our economies.”
In this context, he primarily highlighted the positive performance of the Greek economy in fiscal policy, the institutional and business environment that formed the framework for strengthening the country’s extroversion, both in the field of attracting foreign direct investment and promoting Greek exports.
The Secretary General highlighted the challenges posed by the new, constantly changing international economic environment with the observed trends of fragmentation of international trade, the rearrangement of global value chains and the emergence of energy security issues, which make effective coordination of states necessary for the maintenance and further deepening of an open international economic system.
Finally, Skalkos referred to the excellent level of bilateral economic relations between Greece and Cyprus and the significant prospects that are opening up for cooperation and achieving synergies in the sectors of tourism, agri-food, shipping, information and communications technologies and, above all, energy.
