Recovery work continued on Thursday after the crash of a cargo plane earlier this week in Lithuania.

Emergency services continued to collect the wreckage of the Swiftair aircraft, which was travelling from the eastern German city of Leipzig to the Lithuanian capital Vilnius on behalf of logistics company DHL.

Excavators and other equipment were also used at the crash site. A crane for recovering the large pieces of wreckage was not yet visible on the cordoned-off site, which had been secured by the police.

The cargo plane crashed into a residential area near Vilnius Airport early on Monday morning shortly before landing.

One of the four crew members was killed. The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Lithuanian authorities launched an extensive investigation after the crash and began recovering the wreckage of the destroyed aircraft, which was to be taken to a hangar for examination by experts.

The flight recorders have been found and recovered.

German experts are also involved in the investigation and are taking part in the on-site investigations. According to a dpa reporter at the scene, a vehicle from the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation could be seen in front of a temporary control centre at the crash site.

According to the authorities, experts from Spain and the United States have also arrived in Lithuania.
