Well as I am Jan Jambon myself, I can confirm that identity fraud is real and very problematic.
Always wondered what happens if you refuse to provide your fingerprints when you have to renew your ID
Soooo this is the most useless article I’ve read in a while.

Journalist: So now that we have it, how much has the digital fingerprint being on the eID contributed to catching criminals?
Politics: Oh no clue we dont really keep track of that
Not just identity fraud, but in general: mistakes and no one being able to manually update a record in a database.
A while back my doctor had put another patient’s (positive covid) test results on *my* file, which resulted in *me* getting a red screen on my CST for 10 days (despite never having been tested for covid). I spend hours per day calling all kinds of numbers related to corona, but no one knew who could help me with this.
In the end, the 10 days just were up (I discovered it about halfway, ready to enter a restaurant with a friend and being denied access) so no one was able to actually update my record in some database.
From the simpler times when everyone was only worried about terrorism and they used that as an excuse to get all sorts of new regulations through.
Useless fingerprints on ID, they can detain anyone for whatever reason without notifying a “onderzoeksrechter” for 48h (it was 24h previously), increased information about your financials because of “terrorism funding” etc.
In practice they never end up being used for their “goal”, but since they are there, it will be used for other things.

Ik heb dezelfde vraag bij de “slimme cameras” overal en nergens langs wegen om zogezegd gestolen voertuigen ofzo te detecteren… wat ben je ermee als je kan vaststellen in de logs dat een gestolen/geseind/verdacht vooertuig inderdaad gisteren of een uur geleden gepasseerd is… want tenzij je realtime alerts hebt met die dingen en er onmiddellijk een politievoertuig stand-by staat om erachter te gaan heeft dit toch ook totaal geen nut?
Rond leuven hebben ze bvb zo een “camera schild” aangebracht, ik dacht dat ze na die plaatsing zouden aankondigen dat Leuven een LEZ werd en dat hun “camera schild” dan plots daarvoor ging ge/misbruikt worden… maar so far is dit nog niet het geval…
