Russia loses over 2,000 troops in highest death toll for single day, Ukrainian military reports

   Russian forces have suffered over 2,000 casualties in a single day for the first time, according to the Ukrainian military.

   Kyiv’s general staff reported on Friday that 2,030 Russian troops had been lost over the past 24 hours. It did not specify if these were dead, killed, captured or missing.

   The figure surpassed the previous record of 1,950 casualties that Ukraine said Russia suffered on Nov 12.

   In the same report, the general staff said Russia had lost 33 troop-carrying fighting vehicles, 34 artillery pieces, 89 tactical drones and one anti-aircraft system over the previous day.

   Despite heavy losses, Russia has been advancing at its quickest rate since the early days of the 2022 invasion, when Moscow’s forces swept through swathes of Ukraine before being pushed back to eastern and southern Russian territory.

   Agentstvo, a Russian news agency, estimated earlier this week that the Kremlin’s forces had [captured 91 square miles](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/11/21/how-zelensky-war-rhetoric-has-changed-since-trump-win/) in the week prior to its report, and 232 square miles altogether in November.

   The Ukrainian commanders calculated the total number of Russian casualties since the February 2022 invasion to be 738,660, out of which the Ministry of Defence estimates 500,000 to be wounded.

   These figures could not be independently verified and battlefield losses are notoriously difficult to estimate – and neither Ukraine nor Russia release casualty data.

   The Economist estimated in July that 106,000-140,000 Russians had been killed in the war so far, while the [Ukrainian death toll](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/11/28/ukrainian-mobilisation-officer-explained-kyiv-war-russia/) was between 60,000 and 100,000.

   It said it calculated Ukraine’s losses using data from leaked or published intelligence reports, agencies and researchers.

   High casualties on both sides have been attributed to both armies’ reliance on that Soviet-style doctrine that emphasises massive firepower and overwhelming numbers.

   A joint project run by the BBC and Mediazona, an independent Russian outlet, said on Friday that it had confirmed the deaths of 80,973 Russian soldiers killed since the full-scale invasion began.
