  6. I know what Zelenskky is going for here, since he sees the writing on the wall with the change in the U.S. Administration. My question is, even if he got NATO membership, would Russia honer it, and if they did not honer it, would NATO do anything about it?

  7. Realistically, any ceasefire deal benefits Russia more than Ukraine as Russia would be given time to re-arm and re-organize to renew the offensive. Getting the guarantee from NATO is the best bet to stop Russian aggression in Ukraine and for Ukraine to continue to exist for the next 4+ years. It is a hard call for any leader to make, but giving up occupied territory in exchange for NATO would be the best bet for Ukraine’s near-future existence.

    But there is no way Russia will accept this unless they get a lot out of the deal and even some NATO countries have expressed opposition as NATO-Ukraine could become a powder keg that draws in the whole alliance.

  8. Probably his best idea yet. Just not sure Trump would go for it. Putin has made it clear no NATO for Ukraine. So Trump will run with that.

  11. I can think of a couple of NATO members who will try to sabotage Ukraine joining as much as possible. Well, just the one member, really.

  12. I foresee Russias’ counter offer to be no NATO membership, no returned land, and a swift kick in the ass.

  13. Take the land, agree on not joining NATO. During next year’s “Victory day”… park a few dozen NATO units in UA, **then** sign the agreement effectively joining the alliance… after all, what is an “accord” worth these days?

  16. It would be a great deal for Ukraine but what would NATO gain from this? Adding Ukraine, which has a crippled military and no money, wouldn’t improve security for the existing NATO members and would just make it more likely that NATO gets drawn into a future war.

  19. Yeah, not going to happen. Best option would be to take NATO membership off the table, but then arm Ukraine to the teeth and also rush them into the EU. Long-term, Russia is screwed and will probably fall apart. Ukraine might come out of the deal worse in the short-term, but will grow into a thriving country with a first-rate military.

    Peace for Ukraine is separate to sanctions on Russia.

  22. Making NATO membership the hill to die on is probably Zelensky’s smartest move.

    He knows that there’s no way to take back the territory that Russia has stolen. Even with US support, that option was basically impossible. He’s probably going to have to sacrifice most (if not all) of it to get peace.

    He also knows that any agreement Russia signs with Ukraine isn’t going to be worth the paper it’s printed on. They’ll just rearm and come back for another go.

    NATO membership is pretty much the only guarantee for long term security that Ukraine can have. And if it requires sacrificing any claim to stolen territory, it may be worth making.

  23. I see a lot of negativity here but this could be the first glimpse of an end to this war. Putin must know that even if he manages to fully invade Ukraine and install a Russia friendly leader/puppet he will be fighting an insurgency for ever. There could be a way for Putin to claim victory from this proposed scenario which gives me hope it’s a deal he might accept.

  25. They easily proved they deserve their membership. But if they do, I am not sure how they will manage to recover the lost land, NATO being a defensive alliance.

  26. I’m mind blown at how clueless some of these comments are.

    There’s 0 chance Russia accepts any kind of NATO inclusion of Ukraine right now. Not to mention nato has a policy that requires countries to not be at war to be included anyways.

  27. Nato membership for ukraine, Russia gets to keep donbass until putler dies. Then once the non genocidal adults are back in charge of russia sanctions can be removed in exchange for the return of donbass and crimea.

  30. I’m not a fan of Ukraine giving up land for peace, but if it includes either NATO membership or European Union member states’ armies guarding the Russian-Ukrainian border, then we should be reasonable and consider it.

  32. This should’ve been the plan from the start. The lost land was nowhere near as important as NATO membership.
