Large parts of the fuselage from the German cargo aircraft that crashed near the Vilnius airport were recovered and loaded onto lorries on Friday as the investigation into the crash continues.

The Swiftair aircraft, which was flying from Leipzig to Vilnius on behalf of DHL, crashed into a residential area near Vilnius Airport early on Monday morning under unclear circumstances.

One of the four crew members was killed. The cause of the crash is still unknown.

With the help of a crane on Friday, part of the fuselage was lifted and loaded onto a lorry. The aircraft engines were also removed from the crash site, which has remained cordoned off and secured by police.

The wreckage was brought to a hangar for closer examination by investigators seeking to understand what brought down the plane. The flight recorders have already been recovered.

According to the authorities, experts from Germany, Spain and the US have arrived in Lithuania and are helping with the investigation.

Lithuanian police close the road while investigators and emergency services work at the crash site. Investigators in Lithuania are working on the assumption that the data from the flight data recorder and voice recorder of the crashed cargo plane from Germany can be read out in the near future.
