  1. Veteran Benefits make up about 5% of Federal Spending.

K-12 Education makes up about 1.5% of Federal Spending.

    They’ll cut eduction first.

  2. But kneeling for the anthem is as disrespectful to the troops as terrorism it seems

  3. The military and veterans have always been nothing more than a prop for these fucking conservatives,

  4. Did said anonymous author also call for NASA to be cut and the money used to buy Space X services?

  5. There’s already a recruitment problem. I guess they want to make that even worse.

  6. I’m convinced that there’s a calculated effort to make the general public more amiable to efforts such as these. They will do this, just by creating enough discourse that it is normalized, and by the time representatives are voting on this legislation, veterans will have been just another group for the incoming administration to target.

  7. So the plan is to cut military benefits while also increasing military presence in the U.S. and abroad…

Sounds like a good incentive there. My guess is that they will have to institute mandatory military service soon since they are working on taking away the reasons that most people serve

  8. What! Those suckers! They got for their job and we shouldn’t keep paying them.

  9. Imagine wanting to cut veterans benefits. I hate the military, and generally I disagree fundamentally with the idea of volunteering for the military.

But Jesus Christ, a country sends a person off to
War, to risk their mind and their body, that country must take care of that person.

Even as an anti military lefty, I find the idea of cutting veterans benefits nauseating

  10. What happens when the boot lickers are told not to lick those boots anymore?

  11. The veterans I know are mostly ex-navy and are mostly all right wing Trumpsters. Not too many stories about fighting for America but plenty of stories about the multiple times they got gonnarhea in Subic Bay and Thailand. They are not the brightest bunch.

The ex-Marines are mostly right wing but kinda quiet about their politics.

The exact-Army guys were mostly juvenile delinquents so I don’t really follow those guys.

  12. We all didn’t vote for Trump. I won’t be surprised if we don’t see a huge upswing in veteran suicide in the next 4 years. I know I’m going to struggle if my benefits get taken away.

  13. Here’s the article: [American veterans now receive absurdly generous benefits](https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2024/11/28/american-veterans-now-receive-absurdly-generous-benefits). Note that the provocative headline had previously been a more neutral “The Price of Patriotism” in the print edition. Also note that *all* articles in the Economist (with minor exceptions) are published anonymously.

If you read the whole article it points out that disability payments to veterans have risen six-fold per person over the last couple of decades. A rise like that makes it an obvious target for cost cutters, even though it’s likely to be politically unpopular. They discuss that it’s unclear whether the more populist or the more fiscally conservative factions within the incoming administration will win out.

The article recommends cost cutting, as the Economist is nothing if not fiscally conservative. But it’s a reasonably written and factual article and you could easily read it and come to the opposite conclusion (as I do).

  14. Does anyone have a link to the Economist article in the OP? Would like to read for myself.

  15. Elon might wanna think twice. It won’t go over well with vets. You can’t send folks to war for 20years and then pull the rug out from under them.

  16. “Reducing payments to former soldiers will never be popular, but it would be wise. America’s veteran obsession has gone too far.”

Wow, that is not going to go over very well across the nations VFW halls.

  17. I’ve said this before, but… of all the things to go after *specifically*, veterans? You *want* to upset a group of traumatized, highly trained soldiers with very little to lose?

Whoever wrote and published that story should stay away from windows, is all I’m saying.

  18. People are already regretting their vote… and the Orangeman hasn’t even started his term yet… and no way to fix it

  19. I work with disabled veterans who voted for the asshole who labeled them “suckers and losers.” They were never getting cheaper eggs…it’s all about the hate

  20. Soldiers are like fetuses: some people only care about them until they are out.

  21. Here lies

    The United States of America

    1776 – 2025

“Who would have thought that americans love cheap eggs THAT much.”
