bullshit / clickbait
modern solar modules have an efficiency of 15-20%, how can something be 1000 times more powerful?
I’m sure they’re shaking in their boots
Awful journalism, that article looks like it was written by a middle school student. The claims about “destroying competition” and “1000 times more powerful” are complete nonsense.
Here’s a direct link to the company that the article talks about: https://solhyd.eu/en/faq-en/
This is a basic solar panel combined with common electrolysis technology. Generate electricity via solar power, and if you push enough electricity through water the h2o splits into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas.
Solar panels usually make use of rare earths. Electrolysis catalysts are frequently precious metals. The inclusion (when used properly) of these expensive materials makes the chemical reactions in play here more efficient, meaning you get way more output per unit of electricity / per unit of sunlight.
This company is using solar panels and electrolysis modules that specifically DON’T USE rare earths or precious metals. Interesting idea, because the problem with cutting edge solar panels is that mass production requires a consistent supply of rare earths that doesn’t exist (and the increasing the production of which is fraught with issues).
So yeah, their electrolysis module has a real world efficiency of 12% (from the company’s FAQ page). But they aren’t using platinum catalysts in their electrolysis module… so that wide scale adoption is actually possible.
