Leading member of the Bloomsbury Group Virginia Woolf bought the 17th-century cottage Monk’s House in the East Sussex village of Rodmell in 1919 with her husband, British political theorist and author Leonard Woolf.
Nestled in the South Downs, this was the couple’s writing retreat, complete with a writing lodge in the garden – which really was a room of one’s own for Viriginia, who wrote many of her novels and essays there.
Purchased by the National Trust in 1981, visitors can imagine what life was like for couple as they lived, worked and entertained guests.
Be sure to explore the cottage garden – lovingly created by Leonard Woolf – with its orchard, ponds and countryside views.
