After their 22-19 loss in their Autumn Nations Series Test against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, here’s how the Wallabies players performed on Saturday.
Australia player ratings v Ireland
15 Tom Wright: Although he did not get as many attacking opportunities as he had in previous matches, the Brumbies star was steady at the back and put in a brave defensive shift. 6
14 Andrew Kellaway: Looked dangerous on attack but guilty of poor body positioning when trying to tackle Josh van der Flier, who subsequently scored a try in the first half. Despite that, Kellaway was still prominent on defence and looked for work on attack. 6
13 Joseph Suaalii: The code hopper continues to catch the eye as he put in a big defensive effort and also impressed when chasing kick offs, putting plenty of pressure on Ireland. Less prominent on attack but can still be happy with his efforts. 7
12 Len Ikitau: With the defences cancelling each other out, the 26-year-old was less visible on attack than he usually is but made several brave tackles, especially on his direct opponent Bundee Aki and kept him in check. 6
11 Max Jorgensen: Although he received little ball on attack, the young flyer showed his class with a fine finish for his team’s only try. Jorgensen also did well under the high ball and on defence. 7
10 Noah Lolesio: The 24-year-old was in excellent form off the kicking tee and finished with a 14-point haul courtesy of four penalties and a conversion and put in a brave defensive display. His playmaking skills are still a work in progress but he will be happy with his all-round effort. 7
9 Jake Gordon: The Waratahs stalwart looked sharp during the early stages and tested Ireland’s defence with some sniping breaks during that period but became less influential as the match progressed and was eventually replaced by Tate McDermott on the hour-mark. 6
Strong forward effort
8 Harry Wilson (c): The Wallabies skipper toiled manfully as he caught the with some strong carries and he also put his body on the line on defence. Also impressed with his decision making under pressure. 8
7 Fraser McReight: The 25-year-old returned to the Wallabies matchday squad after being a surprise omission against Scotland and delivered a fine effort. Was prominent as a ball carrier and on defence while also impressing with his breakdown work. 8
6 Rob Valetini: Showed, once again, why he is Australia’s John Eales Medalist for the second successive after delivering another outstanding all-round performance. Valetini was the Wallabies’ shining light throughout as he flew into tackles and gained valuable yardage on attack. 9
5 Jeremy Williams: The Western Force second-row put in a big shift in the forward exchanges as he did what was expected of him in the lineouts but also impressed as a ball carrier and on defence. 7
4 Nick Frost: Continued with his fine form and like Williams, he emptied the tank up front and took the fight to the Irish. Was the Wallabies’ go-to man in the lineouts and put in a big defensive shift. 7
3 Taniela Tupou: The Tongan Thor was only on the field for 45 minutes – before being replaced by Allan Alaalatoa – but will be happy with his effort as he was solid in the scrums and his general play was good. Caught the eye with a fine line break in the first half and also impressed on defence. 7
2 Brandon Paenga-Amosa: Not much to report here. Paenga-Amosa was solid was solid in the execution of his core duties before being replaced by Billy Pollard in the 50th minute. 6
1 James Slipper: Like Tupou, the veteran front-row stood up well in the scrums and caught the eye with some big defensive hits, especially at close quarters, before being replaced by Isaac Kailea early in the second half.
Replacements: While the likes of McDermott, Kailea and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto brought plenty of energy to the cause when they entered the fray, the Wallabies’ replacements did not really make a big impact in this encounter. Improving their depth is one of the challenges which head coach Joe Schmidt will have to work on before next year’s series against the British & Irish Lions in Australia. 5
