  1. I had a feeling. Turkey probably is far from the only NATO member who’d veto Ukrainian accession; they’re just an easy scapegoat, the way France and the UK frequently let the US take the heat on UN votes over Israel. (I’m assuming the real sticking point here is the “rest of Ukraine joins NATO” part, not the territorial-concession part.)

Moscow flatly turning down the Erdogan plan doesn’t bode well for peace, either.

  2. Title makes it sound like turkey won’t support ukraine conceding land

  3. Wait. So Turkey, who is very Russia friendly, don’t want a territorial concession? That doesn’t make sense. Why?

  4. Countries can join NATO with territory contested. This has happened for Canada, Spain, Greece and more. It’s not uncommon or anything.

    Edit: Oh yeah… and Turkey!!

  5. Fuck Turkey. I agree Ukraine should not give up territory, but fuck Turkey.

  6. As Turkey basically controls the Black Sea, I think Ukraine should consider selling Crimea to Turkey – in exchange for help in evicting the Russian squatters.

  7. On a positive side, everybody is talking about peace all of a sudden.

  8. How do you/they define “territorial concessions”?

    a) Recognizing part of Ukraine as part of Russia

    b) accept a cease-fire where Russia has control of part of Ukraine but being still considered “ukrainian territory”.

The first case is extremely unlikely, I even doubt Russia will ask for that since almost noone will accept it (for example, most countries, including China, still consider Crimea as part of Ukraine).

The second case, however, it seems quite likely.

  9. But, we all know that if Russia invades Estonia Erdogan will immediately force Russia to fight a two front war by invading from the south.

  10. Just the thing you don’t want to hear at thanksgiving dinner.

  11. Remember Turkey has been involved in a decades-long rebellion involving Kurdish separatists in SE Turkey. The Kurds want to create their own state using territory from Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. Turkey doesn’t want to appear hypocritical with regards to Ukraine when they themselves will not cede territory to the Kurds

  12. Why is an ukrainian lawmaker speaking for turkey?

  13. Makes sense.

Peace with territorial concessions is not peace. It’s merely a 20 years truce until nazi RuZZia comes back to take the rest.

The word of RuZZia have zero value. Just like their commitment to respect the Ukrainian territorial integrity in the Budapest memorandum.

Only game changer would be for Ukraine to develop its own nuclear deterrent, in the same way Israel had to because of the hostile neighbours.

  14. Good. Did people not learn that appeasing fascists never works?

  15. Unpopular opinion but good. I think this whole mindset of moving closer and closer to Russia is what started all this. Since the USSR fell we have only inched closer when the agreement was don’t come closer and neither will we.

When you then have the vice pres go and say we want Ukraine in NATO publicly it seemingly didn’t bode well as a year later Russia was invading Ukraine

And Putin can fall out a hotel window just like so many of his rivals.

  16. eh, this guy plays like trump. you gotta realize he’s using this as a bargaining chip to try and benefit turkey in some way. he’ll support a peace deal with concessions if it gets him something he wants in return.
