The sights and sounds of buying local on Small Business Saturday

  • 01.12.2024

DENISON, Texas (KXII) – Saturday marks day three of the week’s big holidays — Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Small Business Saturday.

“It’ll keep your money in the community for our own improvements and to promote our town,” Victory Music’s James Brown said. “Small business can provide a level of service that you can’t get online or in big box stores.”

At Victory Music, Brown offers lessons and sells top gear, all with a personal touch.

When asked about it, he said that’s his favorite part.

“Meeting all the people,” Brown said. “You have your regular customers and you get to know people and their own personalities, it’s a lot of fun.”

For instance, around midday on Saturday, a young man came into the store with his grandparent’s violin.

He doesn’t know how to play, but he wants to get it fixed up so he can start.

By the time he left, he expressed his confidence that the instrument was in good hands.

“We do a lot of lessons and repairs and things like that, that you need one on one contact to do,” Brown said.

And just down the street, amidst bookshelves and underneath paintings, it’s easy to get caught between the Pen and Pages.

“We’ve had a really good support system built around us, people have been really supportive since we opened, we’ve made a lot of new friends,” Terry Weir, of the Pages side, said.

She sells books — $3 for paperbacks, $5 for hard covers — and her husband, Skip Weir, makes art, right by the front window for all the passers by to see.

It’s all part of their little downtown dream.

“We waited a long time for this,” she said, “so it’s really a passion of ours to just be a part of the community and do what we’re doing.”

These are just two of the many local businesses spread throughout Texoma that make these communities home.

“We’re here and we’re part of the community, we give back to the community, we’ve built relationships with this community,” Weird said. “We’re not some corporation that doesn’t know what’s going on here.”

So next time a shopping excursion is on the to-do list, take a second to stop and think about all the different stores nearby.
