Had the misfortune of needing to catch the tube at Oxford Circus yesterday and they'd closed off all the entrances for crowd control – was just curious about how frequent this is? I've never seen it before but normally avoid Oxford Street at all costs.

  1. I’ve never seen this sign, but I’ve seen it extremely busy there to the point that all entrances have people surrounding them/impassible.

It’s one of those areas I avoid tbh. It’s just too busy.

  2. Yep, I work nearby a few times a week and it’s really common to either have the entrances closed off at rush hour or to have to queue for a reasonable amount of time to get in. Especially busy this time of year with Christmas shoppers.

  3. Yes. I usually end up walking to Warren street. If I have the energy maybe Euston

  4. In the words of one of my favourite Welshmen; it’s not unusual.

  5. Yes. This might be one of the few places on earth where you can reliably end up in a walking traffic jam.

  6. Yes, easier to stroll down and use Bond Street/Tottenham Court Road than this madness, if you’re able.

  7. Not noticced the LED signs before, but yes, rush hour congestion is very common. On Oxford St and in the lead up to Christmas – absolutely a regular occurence.

  8. In my experience it happens from time to time at a few of the tube stations in that area. Its just a busy place

  9. yup I avoid that area like the plague

if your a Londoner then no need for you to ever go there as everything there is found elsewhere lol

  10. Yes. I used to work around the corner and it would happen daily when trying to commute home.

  11. Yes, especially on Black Friday plus a pay day weekend.

  12. Not seen it myself, but I’ve watched enough YouTube videos about the tube to know that they can and will fo this, certainly at busy times. Like rush hour, Christmas shopping times. They can also open up pedestrian walkway tunnels to funnel people around to avoid overcrowding at the platforms.

  13. I was there yesterday evening – it was bedlam. Never been anywhere so busy and congested, unpleasant really. Got out of there ASAP

  14. I left a west end show last week at the same time another got out. Between this and all the Christmas shoppers I decided to wait 15 mins before even attempting doing down

  15. I made the mistake yesterday. I’ve never been closer to actual manslaughter than having to use Knightsbridge station in a Saturday evening with a family of 7. Swear to god it infringed on human rights…

  16. Pre Covid they’d temporarily close during rush hour and people would spill into the road a lot

  17. Used to work at one of the media companies that had office on great Marlborough street – December was the bane of my existence and I would always just give up and walk to Warren Street or Euston to get the Victoria line

  18. Not seen the sign before. When I worked just off Oxford street. I would regularly wait 20-30 minutes in a queue just to get down the steps into the station…

  19. Last year during christmas i waited inside a tube station for 55 minutes as the crowd was slowly moving. Christmas central London is so pretty but veeery hard to travel through. Reserve extra 3 hours for the christmas decor sightseeing💀

  20. Yep, daily. Used to work at Soho and would go to oxford circus for the tube after work.

  21. Saturday night in the Christmas season? Of course it’s going to be rammed

  22. You can see why the Elizabeth Line’s West End station is Bond Street and not Oxford Circus. And the eastern exit is a mere four minute walk from Oxford Circus.
