Celebrity candidates

  1. Very loose definition of celebrity here. I’d call Seoige a media personality at best.

  2. It’s a bit mad to be fair. Here in Limerick I could never imagine people voting for one of the Dundons, McCarthys etc.

  3. Dublin Central is the only constituency where turnout was up too.

Turns out thr best way to get lazy voters out is to offer a violent criminal as a candidate…

  4. I think a lot of the people who voted for The Monk probably feel like they have absolutely no stake whatsoever in the political system and the vote is a big fuck you to the government.

  5. People really take the ability to vote in free and fair elections for granted.

  6. It’s a damning indictment of the people of his constituency, frankly. They’ll get what they deserve.

  7. Jesus they could put mcgregor in and he’d have a record turnout since they all seem to feel the same as these scum

  8. Presumably a “fuck you” vote? No one would actually expect him to do a good job surely

  9. >Celebrity

    >Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch.

    Hmmmm……………

  10. Hutch won due to popularity. I’ll put it to you this way. When Gráine Seoige announced her candidacy most people had the same reaction, “Gráinne Seoige is running??” When Gerry Hutch announced his candidacy people said “GERRY HUTCH IS RUNNING!!!?!”

Gerry won due to the horror factor. Every time someone posted a picture of one of his posters to bitch about him he gained votes. Everytime someone shared his campaign videos to laugh about he gained votes. Everytime a journalist spoke to him he gained votes.

Gráinne Seoige didn’t win because she wasn’t a candidate that shocked and worried people, Hutch is exactly that and as a result he had way more attention. This is exactly how Donald Trump became US President in 2016. Gerry Hutch has a long future in politics.

  11. Not much represents the decay of central Dublin more than this

  12. After the whole Hutch v Kinahan’s thing had one foot in Irish pop culture (remember the team Hutch/Kinahan tshirts), I think the Hutch side came out of it with this underdog tag, like the lesser of two evils. So there’s some lingering appeal there that shouldn’t translate to political success but maybe it does anyway.

  13. The difference is that, by all accounts, Gerry Hutch has given a lot of money to his local area for decades. In many ways it’s no surprise that someone who is passionate about their local area and gives a lot to their local community is so popular. Especially, when nearly everyone else, including the government, gives absolutely nothing and is often actually quite insulting about the local area.

  14. I voted for him, no particular reason apart from the fact there isn’t a “None of the above” option on the ballot.

  15. The Monk won’t make it across the line.

He just got 44 votes in the last 2 counts.

2800 voted of Mary Fitzpatrick to decide the election in Dublin central.

Marie Sherlock of Labour will overtake the Monk imo.

  16. It’ll be very interesting to see how Mary Fitzpatrick’s (FF) votes will transfer. Labour’s Marie Sherlock is just 482 votes behind Hutch and Fitzpatrick has 2,802 votes to transfer. I’d imagine that Sherlock will get the transfers she needs to pull ahead of Hutch. Although she might have to wait for Donohoe’s transfers to get there if too many of Fitzpatrick’s transfers go to him.

Update: she’s 124 votes behind Hutch after Fitzpatrick’s transfers. But Donohue has over a 1,518 transfers to distribute, so I’d imagine that Sherlock will get enough from those to pull ahead. Still far too close for comfort.

  17. Can we start agreeing that some sections of society are scumbags?
