Spotted in Belgium: an aardappel automaat. Why? What is happening in this country?

  1. What is wrong with that? It is usually sold directly by the farmer. Here (in my region) we have a couple of strawberry, apple, potato automaten

  2. You’re clearly not from the countryside if this surprises you. You see all kinds of vending machines here, strawberries, asparagus, honey… Such an easy way to get fresh produce.

  3. wait, you mean you never wake up in the middle of the night with an invincible envy of mashed potatoes?

  4. Is it your frustration that aardappelautomaat is one word, not two?

Kidding aside, you can find them more often just next to the farms. This way, farmers can deliver their products 24/7 directly to their clients without too many additional costs. I’ve seen them for appels, asparagus, strawberries, etc..

  5. My guess is this used to be one if those stalls that works with the honor system (you take your potatoes and put the money in a sort of mailbox). But people take advantage of that and don’t pay, so they installed a vending machine in stead. Nothing weird about it. I wish they had something like that near me.

  6. Why not? I have a local farmer who sells meat and potatos from vending machines, super easy. Good meat and potatos, straight from the farmer.

Why give money to large corperations when you can just pay the man that actually worked for it

  7. You can buy a lot of stuff from vending machines, so why not potatoes?
Bread in every village, I’ve seen milk, a lot of pharmacies have a vending machine (ours has diapers and babyfood, also aspirin I think), microwave-food, they even have a flower vending machine in Ninove near ‘oh green’! I guess that’s in case you really need a bouquet of flowers when you return to your wife after a visit to a brothel…?

  8. Lol, we got a couple of ‘groentehuisjes’ where I live… really easy imo when stores are closed or need some fresh vegies

  9. What’s the problem? Back in the day a farmer near my house would sell his overstock by the roadside. These days they simply automated the process.

It’s fine, sometimes you want potatoes and they’re usually cheaper and fresher than in the supermarket

  10. This has existed for years now. What is your problem with it?

It’s a good way to exchange farmer goods for money in a safe way.
