The bill doesn’t affect Scotland, so this is less important, but i thought this was an interesting insight in the run up to MSPs voting on assisted dying next year.
A reminder that this was a free vote, parties did not have any official position on the matter.
Why are they voting on whether people can be killed in England and Wales? That bill doesn’t affect Scots law one bit.
But it does highlight a democratic deficit. Scottish MPs are voting on a bill that exclusively affects England and Wales.
If Scotland introduces similar legislation, no English or Welsh politicians will get a vote on that.
This isn’t fair to people living in England and Wales.
Every one of them should have abstained.
Voting on a bill which has no bearing in this country is fucking mental.
Sometimes Scotland just embarrasses me. Voting on an English issue AND voting in a way that is against the will of the English people. What a class act…
At least the SNP had the decency to abstain.
I’m amazed this is getting so much backlash. If a dog lives in pain we put it down no questions asked.
Yet if its a person, who can fully consent, they just gotta put up with it til they die slowly and painfully.
Madness
I’d like to hear it explained why they did not abstain.
Worse than that is most of the no votes would be from religious people. That’s doubling up on it.
Figured ours would, Na h-Eileanan Siar – Torcuil Chrichton. Lots of religious pressure out here, one of the few things both the Catholics/Protestants agree on.
For or against, I can’t say I’m comfortable he voted on an exclusively Eng/Wales issue.
Edinburgh in a box!!
Trust my shitty Labour mp to vote against instead of for or abstain.
In ye olde Labour days we had Douglas Alexander and I thought he was knob but at least you seen him do awkward surgeries in Morrisons. Never seen whoever our MP now is, let alone remember her name. Plus her main address is allegedly in London, not even Scotland.
Classic Scots
This doesn’t give me hope for when this comes up in Hollyrood
Bring back English votes for English laws (EVEL).
I’m not surprised by the highlands.
How long till GPs need to decide between expensive life-time prescriptions and recommending a quicker “solution”? I really don’t like this.
