I’m sceptical Labour will agree to this but if they did, it would be a gift for Reform. Reversing a key part of Brexit without even bothering to risk a referendum.
Makes sense. They’re having to appeal to even more Asian and middle eastern students to make up numbers at the minute.
This isn’t really a fair trade. Also I imagine it’s going to be harder for native Brit’s to get into university’s now
Yet another nothing burger. There is no news in this article, just speculation.
Hope the EU rejects this. It is yet again an example of pure cakeism.
“We only allow a few students to study certain courses in the UK, but you allow all of our lawyers to be able to work in the continent.” Sounds fair and balanced /s
A Youth Mobility Scheme is not free movement. It is a visa program with financial requirements that will “scare away” the people you don’t want coming to the UK. And it’s mutual, not one-sided.
Plus, there’s already a student and cultural exchange programme, which the EU has no problem to agree on: Erasmus +
Stop believing Britain is exceptional and will get a special framework built around the UK when something similar already exists. In fact, Erasmus is far more complete than this botched proposal is.
If you aren’t willing to negotiate something of interest to the EU, they won’t listen to your interests either.

I fear for what will come from all this. There surely comes a point where been back in makes more sense than faffing around.
I feel that brexit has never been given a chance cause it was pushed by currupt liars. We’ve seen next to nothing from it.
I think there was a genuine case for leaving that I could see why some people bought in to…but they were tricked and saw nothing.
The genuine case for staying in remains valid and strong….well I guess its dead in that you csnt remain once you’ve left…you knownwhat I mean
So if we rejoin I’d argue that we didn’t give brexit any sort of chance cause fundamentally it was led by incompetent idiots that overpromised lies.
We can control immigration….remember that one…then Boris opens the borders as wide as possible.
Makes sense for the government to give this up as a bargaining chip, the situation for any prospective EU students is very different to pre-Brexit and I think you would get a minimal uptake.
International fees, access to student loans, eventual access to the local labour market… any student in the EU with the mobility/privilege to spend £20k on tuition is better off trying their luck in wealthier countries like the US, where you might actually get some financial aid.
Are these EU students going to be paying the international student fee rate or the UK rate? I know British universities are on the financial brink with the loss of international students who can no longer bring their extended families with them, but if EU students are allowed in and pay the international fee then I see this as a good deal.
That’s fine as long as they pay proper fees.
As an English student at a Scottish uni, it was beyond unfair that EU citizens could attend for free whilst English students, from UK taxpaying families had to pay 9k
It’s worth trying, but I don’t think it will massively improve. UK has really good top-class Universities, but an EU student comes here because these universities are also extremely good to place their students in very interesting jobs. If an EU student cannot stay in the UK to work after the degree, half of the rationale for joining a UK university disappears.
Yes, the “brand” of Oxford/Cambridge/whatever is still a good point; yes, studying in a UK university has the additional benefit of improving spoken and written English; but many EU universities have teaching standards which are on the same level if not better than most of the UK universities and are much cheaper.
Ffs, does labour or any of the other politicians not get it? We don’t want such high immigration numbers, that was why so many voted for Brexit. Ffs.
pathetic losers.
Honestly, EU students should have some self respect and not go to london.
England made it very clear where they stood when they decided to leave the EU and not have a deal with us.
The fact it came to bite them in the ass so hard they now have to backtrack their pathetic failure policy is something people should not be so quick to forgive.
let them in and rip them off charging triple.
This is the only thing we can sell nowadays
Great, so every asylum seeker in the EU now just has to say they’re 18-25 and in they come.
