Was up the attic today and found what Google says is a miners chip, it was attached to a very old radiator key. I guess they used these as identification to go into the mines?

  1. Or possibly to identify the table they’re sitting at in a wetherspoons.

  2. As I understand it each worker had a token a bit like this, known as a lamp check, and handed it in at the start of each shift when they got their lamp. Therefore there was a record of who was underground in the event of an accident. No idea how to tell if it’s from a colliery or not. A lot would have the name of the mine, and later NCB (National Coal Board) but maybe not all.

  3. That’s been stolen from the local leisure centre changing rooms boyo!

  4. My dad had one of these attached to his miner’s lamp from Treforgan colliery in Crynant. He kept it next to our fireplace when I was a kid.
