Germanys main opposition leader: Can’t rule out NATO involvement anymore

  1. CDU leader Friedrich Merz no longer rules out direct NATO involvement in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. “The attacks and the way this war is being waged are taking on forms that force us to think,” Merz told broadcaster NDR Info on Friday.

“There may be a situation in which NATO will then also have to make decisions to stop Putin,” Merz continued. The CDU leader strongly condemned the attack by Russian troops on the Ukrainian nuclear power plant Zaporizhzhya. “If something like this were to happen again, if possibly even the reactor blocks were to be hit, then we are directly threatened by the effects of this war.”

“That would then be a new level of escalation, in which NATO would then have to think about whether this is not an attack also on its own territory,” Merz said. “But thank goodness we are not there yet.” However, he said, he assumes that the European Union and NATO staffs are also thinking about this very situation.

  2. This is building pressure on Putin not to attack Nuclear power plants.

Basically if you destroy a nuclear power plant the radiation will hit Europe => This will be seen as an act of war against NATO.

  3. Biden should send a very clear message to Russians that attacking any nuclear reactor is NATO’s red line. They should immediately withdraw from that area.

  4. This is the talk of a populist opposition leader that knows he would not have to carry the responsibility for such an action.
An involvement of Nato would at best mean conventional WW3 with hundreds of thousands of dead.
    More likely nuclear war.
    God, how I hate Merz.

  5. Glad he’s the oposition. Cooler heads need to prevail and we already got a maniac on one side.

  6. This is what I was thinking this morning.

If Putin tries to overplay his hand scaring the EU using nuclear plants, this could easily escalate into WW3.

  7. Merz is in idiot in his ivory tower of Frankfurt bankers. He’s like Mr. Burns personified. I couldn’t give less of a shit what he thinks, to be honest.

  8. Disclaimer: Germanys main opposition leader is an idiot and professional attention whore. He is known as the “Fotzenfritz” (no i will not translate that…) for a reason. This guy left politics for two decades because he feared Angela Merkel (the two are in the same party). Once Merkel left he came back and said “Great, i am the party leader now, right?”.

Edit: For American readers its easy to understand. Just assume he is the German Ted Cruz. Thats right on point.

  9. Just some words of one politician in the opposition. That means nothing except that we can be happy the CDU is not in power anymore.

  10. Ignore this guy. He’s a populist career politician.

He’s not the one who will fight in any war, he would only send cannon fodder soldiers. He would nope the fuck out of taking any responsibilities at the first chance he gets.
