  1. Data: USDA Agricultural Census, Recreation.gov

Tools: ArcGIS Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator + D3 (for interactive version)

    Quick facts:

    * Hawaii grows and sells more Christmas trees at tree farms than Alaska. This is because Alaskans are allowed to cut a tree from public lands (certain restrictions apply). [This article](https://www.ktoo.org/2018/12/21/it-started-as-an-experiment-but-this-alaska-christmas-tree-farm-is-still-thriving/) claims there is a single tree farm in Alaska—on Kodiak.

    * Three of the top ten counties for sales from Christmas tree farms are in North Carolina.

    * Tree farms are renewable carbon sinks, they’re great for the environment and local (often rural) economies, and keep tons of plastic out of landfills.

  2. It kind of makes sense that there’d be a major harvest and distribution center on either side of the Rockies.

  3. I grew up in Clackamas County, Oregon which is basically the Christmas tree capitol of the US. The tree farms are everywhere.

The really cool part for me growing up is that we went to the same guy every year for our tree and paid between 5-10 for a 6.5 tree. We just had to cut it ourselves.

I never understood why people would buy fake trees with how much they cost, never realizing that this guy always gave our family a steal of a deal

  4. Ashe County NC got hit very hard by the hurricane this year, so they could really use your business.

  5. yeah i definitely did not read that as Christian trees and was really confused why trees were following a religion

  6. Canada exports 2.5 million xmas trees to the US. I guess next xmas they will be 25% more
