JACKSON, Wyo. — A Buckrail reader across the pond sent in a treasured photo of Jackson taken several decades ago.
Søren Nielsen of Copenhagen, Denmark, shared the image above, which was snapped by his father, Tage, on a multi-state road trip in the U.S. Nielsen estimated that it was taken in 1954 or 1955, near Town Square. He noted the presence of the Wort Hotel. Nielsen identified his sister and brother in the lower right corner of the photo.
Nielsen shared that his father was an Air Force attaché with the Danish embassy in Washington, D.C., at the time. The family did a lot of traveling while they were stationed in the U.S.
“The whole family experienced in many ways the pinnacle of our life time during the three years we were there,” Nielsen told Buckrail via email. “Our trusty 1954 Mercury carried us through 41 states, maybe more states than most Americans will ever visit.”
Nielsen noted that his memories from Wyoming were a bit faint.
“I don’t remember much else than the big warning sign of grizzlies and also the bad smell of boiling mud and the sight of Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park,” Nielsen said.
Nielsen shared that the photo is special to him, and to his family. He said he gave his brother a large print of the snapshot as a 75th birthday gift. He has also held onto the camera that took the photo, a Kodak Retina IIa, as well as the original color slide.
