  1. Don’t use your religion as an excuse. He is homophobic. That simple

  2. What’s the point in these gestures if they are not a complete free choice.

Rainbow flags, Poppies, armbands, if people can’t choose without being attacked it’s all just hollow and meaningless.

  3. It’s all gone too far kneeling and armbands. Can we not just stick to playing the game.

  4. This sub is bullshit, lmao. ‘UK news’ – it’s just a gathering point for bigots

  5. When I (inevitably) start playing for a premier league team I’ll be fine wearing one. But if someone else doesn’t want to, that’s entirely up to them.

  6. If that’s his choice then that’s fair enough and the fact that some people are getting riled up over this is mind boggling.

  7. religion (make it plural) of tolerance strikes again

edit: i take that back actually, he was tolerant to having a child out of wedlock and wearing a gambling sponsor. Its just homophobia hidden behind a religious defence that everyone will buy into

  8. Totally his choice and he shouldn’t be made to wear it.

I think he’s a nob for actively choosing not to and I wouldn’t want him anywhere near my club, but that’s also my free choice. It works both ways.

  9. You don’t need to do this thing but if you don’t, everyone will be told you are a biggot and a phobe.

Really doesn’t sound like much of a choice

Edit – Auto correct replaced phobe with phone

  10. Cites his religious beliefs as the reason. But he didn’t care about his religious beliefs when he was advertising gambling at Middlesbrough. He’s fully entitled to not wear the armband. But he’s talking shit

  11. Hopefully someone can design an armband for heterosexuals and their inclusivity in the name of inclusivity

  12. I have gay friends, but choosing not to wear the rainbow doesn’t make me homophobic.

I support my friends who chose a different sex in other ways, some people are so stuck up with rainbows up their arses they need to let the sun shine in a little

  13. So nothing said about rainbow armband but all hell if someone doesn’t take the knee. Right, got you.

  14. So its on religious grounds ok fair enough if it is,
But his religion takes a dim view on gambling and hes played in kits advertising that and i I’d wager that he’d also have had no problem if his team was sponsored by a beer company (obviously alcohol free).

But when it’s gay people, suddenly it’s a sincere theological disagreement. Weird.

  15. “The 33-year-old, a Britain-born Egypt interntional”
The Grauniad living up to its reputation of typos I see.

  16. He’s free not not wear it; we’re all free to think he’s a massive knob who is setting a terrible example for the kids who look up to him.

That said, if wearing the poppy isn’t optional for public figures, then neither should be wearing the rainbow armband.

  17. It’s so silly. Rainbow armbands are ridiculous but the way they are defended in the Reddit bubble is pretty typical if this place.
