From The Times:
Britain will invest “more deeply than ever” in the special relationship with the US under Donald Trump, Sir Keir Starmer has said as he warned that President Putin posed a “near and present danger” to the West.
The prime minister used his first major foreign policy speech to say that the relationship between Britain and the US had provided the “cornerstone of our security and prosperity for over a century”. “We will never turn away from that,” he said.
In a direct overture to [Trump](https://www.thetimes.com/topic/donald-trump), he said that the US president-elect had been a “gracious” host when the two men met in New York earlier this year. “I told him we will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come,” he said.
However, he also said that [Ukraine](https://www.thetimes.com/topic/ukraine) must now be put in the “strongest possible position” before any negotiations over a peace deal with Russia.
While that’s a good idea, i doubt it’s going to go very well given the way his foreign secretary has talked about Trump in the past.
Elon said last week that the UK is a marxist police state or sth. is Starmer responding to this?
Knowing Trump, he’s likely going to respond by increasing tariffs on the UK. He hates literally everyone, even people who want to help him
That isn’t how this is going to work. Trump ran on appeasing Putin and punishing allies and trading partners.
One of the takeaways from Trudeau’s meeting on Friday was that there was no way to escape tariffs for now. Trump is imposing tariffs to balance the federal budget and, once the budget is balanced, will consider exemptions on a country by country basis.

>According to sources, Trump and his team conveyed that they plan to balance their federal budget through tariffs, and then strike exemption side deals on a country-by-country basis.
The President can only impose tariffs on national security grounds. What will happen is that Trump will make up some lie about how dangerous the UK is, use that to impose 10 – 20 percent tariffs (or higher). Then he will go to Putin and tell him to stop the war in Ukraine. Putin will show Trump a new nuclear missile and Trump will give Putin everything he wants. Trump has continually telegraphed his fear of nukes, and while we are all afraid of them, having the President of the United States constantly talk about his fear of them just gives away leverage, especially to someone like Putin (see the Merkel and dog meeting).
The United States is now run by felons, con artists and conspiracy theorists, that isn’t hyperbole. Starmer can go to Mar-a-Lago, have a great photo op with Trump and try to ignore the laughing when he leaves but UK and US relations are going downhill for the foreseeable future.
