    Sir Keir Starmer warned Donald Trump on Monday night that he would not side with America against the EU, despite calls from the president-elect’s allies to choose between Brussels and Washington.

    In a major foreign policy speech, the Prime Minister said it was “plain wrong” to suggest that Mr Trump’s return to the White House meant Britain had to either get closer to Europe or the US.

    He vowed instead to build bridges to both continents, promising to “invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends”, and to “rebuild our ties with Europe too”.

    The speech included overtures to Mr Trump, with the Prime Minister stressing the need to prepare Ukraine for peace negotiations and calling on Europe to spend more on defence.

    Since Mr Trump’s resounding victory in the US presidential election last month, there has been debate about whether Sir Keir must now embrace America or Europe.

    Some of the Republican’s allies have waded into the argument, with Stephen Moore, his senior economic adviser, saying the UK must reject the EU’s “socialist model”. Sir Keir has faced pressure from within his own party to reject Mr Trump and rebuild ties with the EU.

    However, in his speech to the Lord Mayor’s Banquet in London on Monday evening, the Prime Minister rejected the “either/or” choice.

    He said: “Against the backdrop of these dangerous times, the idea that we must choose between our allies – that somehow we’re with either America or Europe – is plain wrong. I reject it utterly. [Clement] Attlee did not choose between allies. [Winston] Churchill did not choose. The national interest demands that we work with both.

    “Our relationship with the United States has been the cornerstone of our security and our prosperity for over a century. We will never turn away from that. We call it the special relationship for a reason. It is written not in some dry, dusty treaty, but in the ink of shared sacrifice.”

    He added on Europe: “And we will rebuild our ties with Europe too. Because I’m sorry to say the shocking legacy this Government inherited in so many areas – from the nation’s finances to the state of the NHS – extends beyond our shores.

    “They turned their back on the world. Took vital relationships for granted. Neglected some allies – and spurned others. Our reputation as a trusted, stable, dependable partner was replaced too often with an image of disarray governed by short-term political concerns, veering from one extreme to another.”

    Downing Street insiders hope Mr Trump will overlook fierce criticism issued about him in the past by many Labour cabinet ministers, including David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, who previously called the president-elect a “tyrant” and a “sociopath”.

  12. I am still incredibly angry that the british people fell for the lies of the Brexit campaign. For the longest time, i was of the opinion to let them enjoy the self inflicted suffering.
    That beeing said, they are europeans. They always have been, and they always will be. The most annoying kind of euopean, but who is pointing fingers.

    If they want closer association to form a united front against the US fascists, we should do it. Trumpism will be defeated by unity, not division.

It is weird to spend your entire life taking for granted that UK supermarkets will always have what you want and now find empty parts of the fruit and vegetables shelves where stuff you want used to be. It is remarkable that the media seem to not be interested in covering it. A bit like how silent they were when the leave campaign were lying their lying arses off the whole time.

  20. We may not be in it anymore, but we’re far closer to the EU than we ever will be with America – and even more so now Trump is going to be at the wheel. The UK has made a U-turn to the left while the USA has floored the accelerator to drive sharply to the right and off a cliff (and into territory so nightmarishly extreme that it’ll make Trump’s first presidency look left-leaning).

  23. The Trump protectionist approach is so short sighted its crazy. All the threats and bully tactics to make the US prosper will change the whole world ecosystem. The US has been the de facto power in the world due to close relationships and this big brother attitude to many countries around the world.

    Start to act like the bully and countries will shift their alliegences and start thinking of alternative plans that pushes away from the US, maybe not immediately as so much is intertwined with the US economy and dollar but they’ll start the foundations of moving away from the US.

    UK/EU should absolutely grow closer over the US, it’s nonesicle to think otherwise. They are our neighbours and even though we dont all share a language we share a long rich history going back many centuries.

    Europe/UK should also be more open to building closer relationships with China and India and stop being so reliant on the US.

    Primary reason being as we should be doing what’s best for prosperity so straddling between the 2 biggest economies/powers along with an emerging one makes more sense.

    The empire that is the us is on the decline, it’s a country of conflict and division, so much hatred between opposing powers.. In no way that leads to prosperity. All great powers come to ask end and history proves as much. It may not be a collapse but it will in the next 20-30 years decline imo.

    Countries cannot count on stable enduring relationships with the US anymore.
