In this article, Middle-East scholar Koert Debeuf tries to explain what’s going on in the Syrian uprising that’s sweeping the country. He argues that this time, the rebellion appears to not be jihadist, but rather a more civilian, ‘deradicalised’ uprising by more ‘moderate’ forces that are taking advantage of the weakened position of Assad’s allies; Iran, Russia and Hezbollah.
