Ukraine Officially Rejects Security Guarantees Outside NATO Membership

1. Given the 0% success rate of major security gaurantees outside natao, seems like the right decision

2. NATO membership is also not nearly good enough. There is nothing in NATO which guarantees members’ security, and even if there were there’s nothing which will make other members fulfill their treaty obligations. In the end of the day the US will protect the other members or there will clearly be nothing done by anyone else. Ukraine shouldn’t be stuck to NATO membership and instead seek a STRONG commitment by the US and any other parties willing to join it can be a supplemental treaty with NATO membership — and if the US will honestly agree to such a defense pact then that will add strength to NATO. Of course that’s not a guarantee either but it’s better than NATO membership alone which confers no guarantee to begin with. If Ukraine is satisfied with NATO membership on its own then they are fools.

3. Would have been as much worth as the previous security guarantees we gave them when they gave up their nuclear weapons.

4. They already had security guarantees outside of NATO membership (Budapest Memorandum). It seems like that didn’t work.
