Austrians take so much pride in the fact they had their own thing going for most of history. That’s why they will never let anyone, especially a lowly German from Germany tell them that they’re equals.

Everyone’s gonna joke about the Anschluss, ie 7 years, but, if I’m playing devil’s advocate, then considering that it was the Habsburgs who ruled the HRE for almost 400 years it may be more accurate to say that Germans are Austrian.
The Austrio-Prussian war of 1866 is literally called the German war, because it was 2 German states fighting over who will rule over a future united Germany. However, that’s because „German” before 1871 simply meant German-speaking/part of the German cultural world. In French publications/books Alsace and the Alsatians were literally referred to as „l’allemands” and the languages spoken there as „allemand”, because it was just a language/culture identifier. So modern Austrians are not Germans, because they are not citizens of Germany…
