Looking beyond the headline: the president of Romania just picks the prime-minister, the real power is in the hands of the prime-minister and with this election the far right is very close to getting their prime-minister. Next election they will definitely have more than half of parliament and I can easily see prime-minister George Simion leading the country for 14 years like Orban in Hungary.

    Georgescu and the women who lead the two smaller far right parties were all part of the AUR party lead by George Simion. He made the party in 2019 and is already the second largest party and would be the first party if sub-parties didn’t split from it. The real winners from this election cycle are AUR and Simion.

    Many people on the Romanian part of reddit were laughing at AUR and thinking they couldn’t get far but I am not surprised at all. The far right parties in the past like PRM and PP-DD didn’t last long because they were lead by idiots who just yelled loud and that’s it. On the other hand George Simion and AUR had by far the best campaign this year where he was constantly on the ground talking to people from villages to cities, I even saw him in Bucharest subway personally handing out flyers and he also had surprisingly good debate performances where he knows when to shut up and where to be a moderate. He also has a reddit account, imagine if Donald Trump randomly popping up on r/politics replying with “WRONG” or Viktor Orban having genuine a genuine AMA on r/europe.

    I don’t know how it is in Germany or France with their far right parties or in Hungary, Slovakia or Serbia, but, here, it’s obvious that no party tried to stop AUR or even attempt to counter his campaign. Just like with Trump, constantly yelling “Russia” or “fascist” gets old quick, you actually need to campaign and talk to people about the issues and promise to solve them to get their votes if you want to stop the far right. I knew it was over when even on progressive reddit 20% of users admitted they will vote far right.
