South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on Tuesday, citing the need to counter “pro-North, anti-state elements” that he accused of undermining the country’s foundations through legislative overreach and budget cuts.
In a televised press briefing, Yoon claimed “anti-state forces” in the National Assembly have paralyzed the functioning of the government by impeaching officials, slashing budgets and attempting to “overthrow the liberal democratic system.” He vowed to “eradicate” such threats to “rebuild and safeguard” South Korea.
