Here’s what I have been able to gather so far:
– the constitution has been suspended,
– there are military vehicles all over seoul, choppers included across the city, [https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Gd4mOjzXoAAa9HH?format=jpg&name=medium](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Gd4mOjzXoAAa9HH?format=jpg&name=medium) | [https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Gd4isM9WgAABiyT?format=jpg&name=small](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Gd4isM9WgAABiyT?format=jpg&name=small)
– all press and broadcasting organizations will be taken under the control of the martial law command (it has been taken as of now, there are names assigned to each of them), the activities of the parliament and political parties will be (is) banned,
– according to the martial law order, anyone who violates it can be arrested without a search warrant,
– president Yoon: “since the opposition parties in south korea have taken the parliamentary process hostage (and because of their closeness to north korea), i had no choice but to resort to this measure to secure free and constitutional order”. (what a joke rofl, unlawfully suspends the constitution and declares martial law… in order to protect the constitution, hahaha),
– the army is entering the parliament: [https://x.com/ClashReporttr/status/1863977886622871920](https://x.com/ClashReporttr/status/1863977886622871920) | [https://x.com/ClashReporttr/status/1863963436519948769](https://x.com/ClashReporttr/status/1863963436519948769)
– south korean parliament speaker: “every place where the deputies gather is the parliament. we will start the parliamentary session immediately.”
– parliament voted to cancel the president’s decision to impose a military government. It was unanimously 190:0 | [https://x.com/krishnakamal077/status/1863999569111171441](https://x.com/krishnakamal077/status/1863999569111171441)
– Speaker of the South Korean Parliament: “In accordance with the parliamentary decision, the President must immediately lift martial law because martial law is no longer in effect. The military and police must also return to their duties in accordance with the parliamentary decision.”
– army is leaving the parliament (not 100% certain yet): [https://x.com/ClashReporttr/status/1863985081099911584](https://x.com/ClashReporttr/status/1863985081099911584)
– The Seoul District Prosecutor’s Office continues to issue arrest warrants for opposition politicians and journalists under martial law orders.
– An investigation has been launched into soldiers in South Korea who continued to operate under rogue martial law orders despite them being lifted by the parliament.
I will make further edits.
Edit1: Added some video footage and pictures to substantiate some of the bullet points.
Edit2: New bullet points.
I haven’t seen any news of an emergency in South Korea lately? Has something been going on that didn’t get reported or has this just come out of nowhere?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
he is blaming the opposition of having a conspiracy with *Communist North* and they will strip away South koreans freedom from them.
Him and his wife are both corrupt. His wife is being investigated while his own approval rating has gone down the drain
What the…
Can someone explain for the Americans who have been too embroiled in their own political bullshit lately to even know what’s going on?
This is the first I’ve heard of anything of the sort. 🙃
What i dont get is i think this has happened before but how come SoKor didnt put safeguards in place to prevent this happening again? In my country, this was also done before to usurp power but after that, there’s been changes and it now requires i think congress or senate also to approve before a martial law is enacted
Looks like his popularity among voters is about 25%, I doubt this will go on peacefully. But I’d like to know how’s his relationship with the military and chaebols. I’m curious too see the krx index tomorrow and how the Won will behave
How sad, I hope international forces can remove this despot from his power grab, but unfortunately I expect the exact same thing in the US in 4 years when Trump is supposed to step down.
imma be honest, this is ahead of schedule, I expected chaos to start happening in the world after the inauguration on January 20th.
Can anyone from that part of the world guess what would happen if both Koreas went batshit with their own dictators?
As an American knowing Yoon’s victory was very similar to Trump’s, I am TERRIFIED.
South Korea has a history of being a dictatorship unlike the US but it’s been a democracy for 44 years until today.
Peru had something similar and the President was immediately arrested, I hope the same happens here. The longer martial law exists here the worse chances of stopping it
Corrupt politician declares martial law just as he is about to be impeached while claiming he is doing this to save the country from an evil takeover.
Is this the new standard now for corrupt politicians?
According to CNN the martial law order legally has to be lifted if parliament votes for it to be lifted, and [they just did](https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/martial-law-south-korea-intl#cm48lrj00000x3b6m3e2iviej). So it could be a flash in the pan moment of madness that gets immediately checked. If he somehow manages to impose martial law anyway it could get pretty bad because he will be starting out by overruling the legal system for it.
I won’t lie this has completely blindsided me. I was thinking about doing a yearly round up of all the conflicts/ hotzones in the world and would have put the Korean peninsula as the least likely to start a major crisis.
From the Associated Press about 25 minutes ago:
>parliament voted to lift the declaration, with the National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that lawmakers “will protect democracy with the people.”
So that was short lived. Every member of parliament present for the vote voted to end martial law.
Reason number 94 why executive presidents are an utterly terrible idea.
Combining the roles of Head of Government and Head of State is just asking for trouble. It encourages corruption, demagoguery, incompetence, electoral fraud and ultimately dictatorship.
The exemplar, super strong, best of all, only real democracy in the region, south Korean democracy.
