>__Nearly one in four Swiss claim to have driven after consuming alcohol. This rate is particularly high in comparison with other European countries, warns the Swiss Accident Prevention Bureau.__
>The agency is calling for caution in the run-up to the festive season.
>According to the study, carried out in 2023 in 39 countries, including 22 in Europe, 23% of Swiss claim to have driven at least once after consuming alcohol in a 30-day period. In Europe, the rate is only 15%.
>The 2023 survey, carried out in collaboration with 14 cantonal police forces, shows that almost 4% of motorists drive after drinking alcohol, and 0.4% have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.5 per mille. At night, the rate is even higher, with one in seven drivers under the influence of alcohol.
>Last year, 31 people were killed and 506 seriously injured in alcohol-related road accidents. Alcohol was involved in almost 12% of accidents resulting in serious injury. The situation has not improved over the last 10 years, deplores the accident prevention agency.
>__Young drivers: an improvement__
>However, it notes that measures targeting young drivers appear to be bearing fruit. The under-30s are generally behaving more responsibly than their elders.
>In the run-up to the festive season, the agency recommends that drivers refrain from drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel or, if they have had a drink, leave their vehicle where it is and take a cab or public transport home. It recommends carpooling, with a sober driver designated in advance.
>In any case, people who have been drinking should be prevented from getting behind the wheel. For their part, hosts are invited to offer non-alcoholic beverages.
Oh dear. The journalist meant drunk driving.
And the other three quarters don’t
Absolutely get fucked, I hope y’all lose your license and have to start over (in 5 years when you‘re allowed to again).

In a 30 day period aswell which means these fuckers do that shit regularly.
Anyone who gets caught once shpuld never be able to drive a car again.
Probably more than 50% here in Valais
Oh well…. a good reason to invest in public transport and take them their license away I guess?
Pathetic. And no excuses as Switzerland is one of the countries With the best public transportation.
I hope all of them lose their driving licence.
>A quater of swiss drivers admits driving blow the legal limt
> r/switzerland has a melt down
I am always surprised at how normal that is here – in France as well
People do it where I come from because public transport doesn’t exist in most places … but now with Uber etc, it is inexcusable
It is always inexcusable!
Morons, I love getting pissed as much as the next person but never near a car.
Thats ok as long as you can drive.
They should smoke and fly. 🤷🏻♀️
Drunk driving is not the real danger, driving with not enought sleep is what’s dangerous
That’s not much if we consider that, for years, the prevention campaigns slogan was „one glass is okay“.
That explains quite a lot. Though that isn‘t exactly a shocking revelation.
Drink driving sounds much nicer than drunk driving lol
…and 3/4 of the French transfrontaliers 😋
Absolutely a thing here in small village VD .. Especially with the older local crowd ..
The amount you can drink is proportional to the distance you need to drive.. So if you are just 2km away from home at the auberge in the next village, you can pretty much drink as much as you like.
I don’t condone this of course, but it’s honestly what many old locals have told me trying to persuade me to – go on, take a drink, you just live 2km away, it’s almost a straight line.
>Nearly one in four Swiss claim to have driven after consuming alcohol.
Ok but there is a difference between a glass of wine or beer and let’s say 10 tequila shots, would be nice to know how much they consumed.
Completely sober would be perfect, but that’s just not a realistic expectation. If everyone would always fully adhere to laws and regulations it’d be grand, but it’s not how the world works.
Don’t drink & drive.
Edit: Just noted it’s presumed about 0.4% are over the limit. Still too much but not as wild as the headline suggests
You put people in expensive little individualism boxes, promise them endless freedom and don‘t enforce the few rules we have.
„I had to drive drunk, busses are full if stinking people during the night.“
„I had to speed, I was late for a meeting.“
„I tailgated to show that guy to drive 5 above the limit. Everybody knows that‘s the tolerance of speed cameras.“
What a surprise…
It would not surprise me if 1 in 4 on the roads were drunk with the way they drive.
I was driving on route suisse in Prangins last night and they were pulling every other car over and making drivers take a breathalyzer. Police office said they were preparing up for the holidays. So hopefully we see a quarter less drivers on the road to start 2025
I’m not surprised hahaha
Were you drunk when you typed that?
Yikes.
Well that’s an excuse to stay home Saturday.
The other day i was driving home on a saturday night from a friends house. I almost crashed into some guy in a tunnel because he was driving on my lane. Pretty sure he was drunk. I hate those kind of people.
Useless stat because CH tolerates 0.05%
I think it’s the Apéro-Culture. People drink with their colleagues after work before driving home. There’s this general agreement that one or two glasses of wine is ok (which is absolutely not imo).
