  1. Ironically, he was a member of “Opposition Platform – For Life” party, which was pro-Russian and was banned after the invasion in 2022. That didn’t prevent Russians from abducting him and killing him in captivity after all this time.

That being said, the man apparently died a hero:

“At the end of February 2022, Russian forces captured the city, and on March 13, Matveyev was informed by phone that Russian forces had detained a bus carrying employees of the Zaporizhzhia Iron Ore Plant. He went to the scene, and as a result, the workers were released, but he himself was taken captive.”

  2. He traded his life for the lives of civilians, I think he got overconfident….

  3. >Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration, has reported that Yevhen Matvieiev, the mayor of the temporarily occupied town of Dniprorudne, who was abducted by the Russians in March 2022, died in Russian captivity.

    >**Source**: Fedorov on Telegram

    >**Quote**: “The Russians captured Dniprorudne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast at the end of February 2022. Later, the mayor, Yevhen Matvieiev, was taken prisoner. He was held captive by the occupiers for two years and eight months, and he was tortured.”

    >**Details**: Fedorov said that Matvieiev’s body was brought back to Ukraine during the last prisoner swap.

    >”He was strong-willed and had his set of values. During the occupation, he did not leave the town or the people, did everything to ensure the life of the community, constantly informed the population about the course of events and supported them,” Fedorov added.

    >**Background**:

    >It became known on 13 March 2022 that the mayor of Dniprorudne had been abducted by Russian forces.

    >On 29 November, the bodies of 502 fallen defenders from the Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia fronts, as well as from the territory of the Russian Federation, were brought back to Ukraine.
