Russian ship crew shoots with signal ammunition during Bundeswehr deployment

1. In the Baltic Sea region, tensions between Russia and the Western states are escalating. During a deployment of a Bundeswehr helicopter, shooting is fired from a Russian ship. Foreign Minister Baerbock announces more patrols to protect critical infrastructure.

   In the Baltic Sea, there was an incident between a Bundeswehr helicopter and a Russian ship. The crew of the Russian ship had fired with signal ammunition, the dpa news agency in Brussels learned. The helicopter was on the way to reconnaissance.

   Earlier, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) had briefly mentioned the incident on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Brussels. However, she did not give details. When this incident occurred is not yet known.

   The use of signal ammunition is actually only common in emergency situations. Baerbock had pointed out that there are always ships on the way in the Baltic Sea that are involved in the evavention of sanctions due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

   Baerbock announces more patrols

   The Green politician also announced that the monitoring of pipelines and data cables in the Baltic Sea is to be strengthened. The protection of critical infrastructure by patrols should be expanded, she said. The reason is the increase in hybrid attacks from Russia and its supporters.

   As examples, Baerbock mentioned the destruction of cables, the disruption of the global position determination system GPS and the incident with the German Bundeswehr helicopter and the tanker.

   Tensions in the Baltic Sea

   Most recently, damage to two fiber optic cables in the Baltic Sea occurred in November within a short time. This was a cable that runs between Sweden and Lithuania and one between Finland and Germany. The cause of this is still unclear in both cases. The Swedish authorities are investigating for possible sabotage. The focus of the investigators is on a Chinese ship called “Yi Peng 3”, which is said to have passed the affected parts of the cables at the time in question. Earlier last year, a gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was severely damaged.

   After the damage to the communication cables in the Baltic Sea, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk had recently proposed joint surveillance of the sea by the navy of the western bordering states.

   In addition to Russia, China, North Korea and Iran in particular are accused of wanting to weaken states in Europe with so-called hybrid attacks. This umbrella term summarizes actions that use state or non-state actors to harm other countries without waging an open war. As a rule, they are difficult or not at all to assign to a specific author.

9. Didn’t Turkey shoot a russian airplane a few years ago because it was violating something? Think they never probed Turkey again on that level.

17. I think we have to apologise to Russia. It was our mistake after all. If a Russian bomb gets dropped on Berlin, I expect Germany to apologise too. Germany has no guts. I absolutely hate that there is no one with common sense. This war cannot be ended diplomatically. When will this get in your thick head, embarrassing politicians of my country?

19. Once again the absolute echo chamber that is the comments. All these rabid cries for “shooting back”, meaning in some way starting ww3, and there’s no other opinion allowed.
    Maybe NATO expansion is a problem. Maybe breaking promises to not expand it, isn’t/wasn’t a good decision or a morally righteous choice.
    Why should a nuclear power allow another nuclear power to deploy missiles less than 1000km, not from their border, but from their capital city?
    Would it be a smart choice for the Russians to allow short-medium range missiles next to Moscow? Literally, parts of Ukraine are around 4-500km from Moscow.
    It seems ridiculous that it is even possible to consider this as a rational decision, let alone “the right of a sovereign nation”.
    The only rational decision under these circumstances for Russians would be for them to say: “Ok, you guys were right, our bad, we’ll just cancel the country, burn the history…it’s open season, whoever stakes a claim first gets it all, we won’t do anything, just come and take it”.
    Is that something you’d expect a fairly old nation state to do because you want them to and you don’t “approve” of their leader?

20. The west is pussy footing into WWIII. Grow some balls. We are here, this is happening. It has been going on for some time. Putin has been using migration as a weapon on the US. He is partners with the Venezuelan government. And that regime has displaced and sent millions right to America. We are getting cyber attacks daily. Our airspace has been violated more than a handful of times.

    Hit Putin and North Korea fast and hard. Don’t stop, turn their infrastructure into rubble. Pound their military infrastructure for a year straight day in day out. Break the fucking will of these countries to ever fight again.
