On the seventh day of December, may your true love buy for thee, a bottle of rare and otherwise unidentifiable liquor. Or something along those lines. If that sounds like something you would enjoy, or maybe is the perfect gift for that someone in your life who seems to have everything, you’re in luck.

WHUP 104.7 FM, Hillsborough’s audio beacon of local news, on-air talent, good music and fascinating guests, has kicked off its largest fund raiser of the season, and is showing off its holiday spirit in a big way.

WHUP’s biannual Fund-A-Thon runs until Dec. 8, and the week will feature guest DJs from local bands, sitting at the controls providing listening treats.

But the main event — An Evening of Rare Spirits — takes place from 6 p.m. to 7, Dec. 7 at Paynter Law in downtown Hillsborough.

“We’ve (WHUP) been gifted multiple rare bottles of whiskey and other spirits dating from the 1940s to 1980, that will likely not be sampled or even seen again and that attendees will get to taste,” said Bob Burtman, president of WHUP. “It’s a alternate take on our ‘Evening of Ugly Wine’ that we did pre-pandemic. That was always a big, fun success.”

The fund raiser, which was postponed from October because of the Hurricane Helene aftermath and crush of election coverage, will provide much-needed fuel in WHUP’s efforts to keep chugging along and fund a new station manager hire, which is in progress.

Tickets for “An Evening of Rare Spirits” are $95 each, and there is limited availability. Mark Solomon, who directs the Fine Wine and Rare Spirits Department at Leland Little Auctions will emcee the proceedings. Eryk Pruitt, who owns Yonder Southern Cocktails and Brew will be the celebrity pour master. The Saratoga Grill is catering the event.

While “An Evening of Rare Spirits” is a tasting event, Burtman said there will be an opportunity to take home something from a very special evening.

“There will be a couple of bottles that we will actually auction,” he said. “A couple of very rare bottles, and only people who are there will get a chance to buy them. They’ve never been opened, but sometimes there’s a little abrogation of the seal, a little evaporation. But still, booze doesn’t go bad. It might get a little discolored.”

“An Evening of Rare Spirits” will also feature door prizes and entertainment, including live music, a fortune teller and a mentalist. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-evening-of-rare-spirits-tickets-1083076584219. You must be at least 21-years-old to purchase tickets.

Paynter Law is at 106 S. Churton St. in downtown Hillsborough.
