Cutty Sark DLR station where passengers forced to climb 121 steps branded a ‘disgrace’

  1. I use this station for work everyday. Excellent workout but it is totally ridiculous. Been broken for ages. Worst part is they randomly change which entrance you can enter from sometimes for seemingly no reason and its never the one to go to first….

  2. Moved in the area in 2021. 2/4 escalators were always broken, which seemed to change every week or so. They put up signs apologising and how in the next 1 year all 4 will be refurbished. 2 were replaced with brand new ones. Then the signs disappeared. Moved out of the area in 2024 but still visit occasionally and now all 4 are broken.

It beggars belief the incompetence of management and/or engineering companies that can’t figure out how to get 4 escalators in working order for over 3 years now…

  3. As a person who sprained their ankle and is still recovering, getting in and out of this station is absolute hell

  4. It’s been going on for a lot more than 5 years and it seem TfL have not agreed the funding for a proper replacement. Maddening.

  5. Its only a disgrace for the passengers. The PFI companies charging TFL for the maintenance love it!

  6. The station is an embarrassment considering it’s used to access one of the key tourist spots in London. On top of the escalators not working the station is filthy and tatty, I guess it was built on an very tight budget.

Needs a full refurb and replacement of all the escalators as they clearly aren’t able to be repaired.

  7. I have to use this one when my bus to and from work has issues, which is semi-regularly, and it is a a pain in the arse. It’s literally totally impossible for a physically disabled or elderly person to use and it’s been like this for years, it’s well past time something was done.

  8. In one form or another, this station has been broken since at least mid 2019.

It’s in no way justifiable and there’s no end in sight.

  9. Let s buy birthday cake for it . Maybe it is a teenager now .

An old post says , it starts to malfunction since 2005…. 19 year old !!!!!

  10. “Keep paying your fares, peasants! We’re TfL and we don’t give a fuck about you.”

Just be thankful they’re not all on strike this week.

  11. Trust me if the transport minister had to go up those stairs twice a day, it would be sorted. Come on TFL do better.

  12. This is definitely bad yes, but I really don’t like the use of “forced” here. Nobody is being compelled at gunpoint to ascend these stairs. It’s a bugbear of mine

  13. And yet there are other stations with neither escalators nor lifts and we have no choice but to trudge up and down stairs. First world problems.

  14. It’s only got one tiny lift. When the main entrance is closed, which is most days, there is a single card reader at either side entrance.

  15. We need to change the culture of public sector spending in this country from one of having armies of accountants, financial comptrollers that incentivise budget constraints for the sake of budget constraints to one that actually incentivise the non-monetisable benefits of doing stuff.

Of course a group of engineers could fix this issue fairly quickly but it will cost money, which does exist but can’t be approved or allocated until after the new financial year and this isn’t a big enough problem for someone with the authority to overrule those fiscal barriers.
