At first glance, it seems unlikely that President-elect Donald Trump and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) would agree on much, but Trump’s nomination of Paul Atkins as the next chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) appears to be one Gillibrand can get behind.

“Atkins could very well be a good SEC head,” the New York senator tells Yahoo Finance, adding that the 66-year old, who was previously the SEC commissioner under President George W. Bush from 2002 to 2008, “has the right experience” to create federal crypto legislation.

Gillibrand has been one of the few Democrats pushing for crypto legislation, introducing the bipartisan Responsible Financial Innovation Act (RFIA) to Congress last spring, which would have drawn a clear line between a security and a commodity and required companies to disclose the risks of certain assets in plain language. The senator makes it clear that the Wild West of cryptocurrencies is in desperate need of regulation, and hopes Atkins can fill that role.

“We need someone who will actually do the regulation, create the rules of the road, create safety and soundness, create transparency and accountability, create consumer protection, and not be afraid to work with lawmakers in a productive way,” Sen. Gillibrand explains.

After November elections saw several GOP pro-crypto candidates win their races, Democrats are behind when it comes to winning the trust of the sector, but Gillibrand doesn’t believe the learning curve is as steep as it seems.

“I think the real impediment is first perception. But, second, a lot of people just don’t have a deep knowledge base. And so this is a fairly complex new industry, and not everyone has taken the time to learn it. I’ve been urging my colleagues to do so. It’s not that scary once you figure it out,” She says

While Gillibrand is a supporter of crypto regulation, she doesn’t own any herself as bitcoin (BTC-USD) now hovers right below $100,000.
