Hi everyone, question regarding Pendlerpauschale. In the beggining on this years, when I did my austrian tax return, I got a refund of over 2k€ for my Pendlerpauschale. After I knew that, I contacted my company and asked to be paid monthly along with my paycheck but only get paid around 70€/month.
Can anyone explain how come with tax return I got almost triple? Is that like a tip & trick that I stumbled upon?

  1. The Pendlerpauschale reduces your income before taxes, depending on your tax-percentage you will receive 20/30/40 etc. % of the PP on your paycheck.
2520,– means 210,–/month. If you are in lower 30% taxes this can result in 70,– net/month.

  2. Info: how and where did you get the numbers from for the tax return?
There is a calculator for the km driven and it tells you how much you get as Pendlerpauschale and then there’s the pendlereuro.

What did you tell your company? Can you use public transport? How many km do you drive to work? And how many days per month are you at the company?

  3. Sigh…

No you did not get ~2500 last year, because Pendlerpauschale ist only a income tax reduction.

You pay income tax for 10.000. With 2500 Pendlerpauschale this will be reduced to 7500. So you only pay income tax for 7500.
