  1. I’m sure this will be an interesting comment section.

  2. > _The ONS said on Thursday that pop culture “continues to influence” name choices, citing singers Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, the Kardashian-Jenner family’s children Reign and Saint, and film stars Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy._

    Mo Salah effect, then.

  3. Surprisingly, Muslims are just about 5% of the British population. The reason Mohamed comes out on top is because non Muslims tend to have more diverse baby names, while Muslims name every second baby ‘Muhammad’.

  4. Brexit going well guys? 😂😂No more pesky Europeans now.

    Enjoy

  5. Muslims name their kids Muhammad far more than most White families are naming their kids Jesus.

I for one am outraged, and will clearly imply some sinister action be taken on a population who’s majority are second/third generation British people, because I’m a fucking moron and feed off of ragebait in the media and constantly need some group or thing to blame for my own personal perceived shortcomings of myself and my nation.

  6. Muslims seem to lack imagination when it comes to names.

  7. This link provides more context:

4661 babies were given that name, but 4382 were given the name Noah, and 3556 were given Oliver. If we operate on the assumption the majority of children given the names Noah and Oliver were of European heritage, that means more white kids are being born almost 2:1, based solely on the first three ranks.

On the surface it might appear that more children of an overseas heritage are being born, but that simply the result of people *consistently* choosing the name Mohammed at a higher rate. In terms of percentage, it is a lot compared to other more diverse choices, but in absolute numbers it is a small proportion.

  8. Ahh such a wonderful British name, right up there with Richard and Tommy

  9. Damn Great Britain stole that name too. There’s nothing they won’t steal

  10. Even worse when you consider that spelling variations were not taken into consideration

  11. This literally the least offensive tradition of muslims.

  12. Hardly a surprise. If memory serves me right, Muslims typically name their firstborn son Muhammad because the Quran says that this is a good name for a firstborn son. Christians have no such law or recommendation from religious texts, so we just come with a name that we like. Thus, it doesn’t take much for Muhammad to be the most common name for newborn boys.

  13. I wanted to make a joke about how the top English name should be some very common Indian name, but then I learned that Mohammed is the second most common name in India..

  14. Well yeah. Muhammed is the most commonly used name on Earth. Read a fucking book for once.

  15. Thats a misunderstanding. The first names of muslims especially from South Asia are their middle names. They put muhammad infront just as a sign of respect.

Its usually Muhammad XYZ surname. Muhammad isn’t their name. XYZ is their name.

  16. “Evan : McLovin? What kind of a stupid name is that, Fogell? What, are you trying to be an Irish R&B singer?

Fogell : Naw, they let you pick any name you want when you get down there.

Seth : And you landed on McLovin…

Fogell : Yeah. It was between that or Muhammed.

Seth : Why the FUCK would it be between THAT or Muhammed? Why don’t you just pick a common name like a normal person?

Fogell : Muhammed is the most commonly used name on Earth. Read a fucking book for once.”

  17. Maybe there are a lot of JoJo’s fans out there…

  18. 1.2 million people move to that tiny island every year… Insane

  19. Yeah that sounds about right. Muslims are a small percentage of the population but they name pretty much every first born boy Mohammed whilst all other demographics pick unique and diverse names.

  20. Why would you name your child after a pedophile?

  21. That is not a good thing and I don’t care what anybody says.

  22. In Quebec (Canada), an almost exclusively Catholic province for the longest time, just about every girl’s first name was Mary and every boy’s was Joseph.

Most of my friends went by their middle names.

  23. This is barely news in the UK, so “world news” for something with a very obvious reason behind it? You lot must be bored as hell.

  24. Muhammad has been the most popular name in the world like forever. This is some weird nationalist rate bait headline.

  25. I used to want to visit England, I don’t think I want to anymore.

  26. Incredibly depressing. Erasing European culture one baby Muhammad at a time.

  27. I thought that technically all muslim boys were named Muhammad, but then usually went by their second or a different name?
